Boat docking duration

Postby The Industriallist » Thu Jul 29, 2004 1:33 am

I'm currently docking a longboat, and the time it will take has me puzzled.

Getting from undocking to out of "you see" range from my original launch point took about a day. Docking is going to take me 5 days, I think, and I started it at the first opportunity. (already at 15%)

Is this normal?

It is a pain docking with the long ships...I also thought it was a bug, but they are just dreadfully slow.

I would like to see the vikings traying to do their lightning raids with ships of the Cantrian caliber...the towns guards would have had time to build a bridge out to their ships before they even got away :)

But are they supposed to be slower docking than sailing normally? That's what gets me.

There is a difference between a Viking Longship, and an actual longboat, which is the name of what is built in Cantr.

In real life, a longboat is just an overgrown rowboat carried by another, larger ship (think of the big lifeboats in Titanic)

A viking longship is a whole 'nother animal; complete with a mast, single-sail, and crew of burly Norsemen to run it.

No way could a single person manage a longship, so while I too am frustrated with the limitations of the Cantr longboat, perhaps we all are expecting a bit too much from them.

Can single persons handle darters, soarers and whatever else the ships I have never heard about before then? :)

Something I've always wondered about - the Raker, Darter, etc are presumably based on the Athan'Miere?

Don't know, I'm assuming yes, but I'd have to get on one first to figure it out.

The only point I was trying to make is that longship and longboat in real life are two entirely different things, and when people complain about how slow longboats are and bring up images of Viking raiders swooping down on coastal towns, they should realize that maybe they are in a different craft than what they imagine.
