Playing characters of the opposite sex...

Postby TheTheorist » Fri Jul 30, 2004 2:34 pm

I don't know if this has been talked about before on here but I play some characters of the opposite sex in Cantr. At first purely to see the different reactions I get in various situations and it gives me chance to expand my character range from Tough men to Immature/Childish/Weak men from Tough women to Weak women whatever... they're all in there.

Obviously my female characters get approached by men in a flirtatious way and I try to stay in character even though sometimes it's tricky. Its not tricky for me to decide what they should do but more tricky when I think that the other player does not know it's a fella controlling the character. It plays on my conscience. The big question is does it matter?

Obviously there are a lot of blokes out there that if they found out they were flirting with a female character controlled by another bloke they'd go ape shit... Please discuss so I can decide whether to make my female characters hold back or go with the flow.

I like to think I'm open minded enough to play the characters whatever situation they're put in. But if this seriously bothers people then please say now.

I play characters from all walks of life as a massive social experiment. I can learn people's attitudes towards needy people, powerful people everything... try it for a change it opens your eyes.

I'm not gay, bi-curious, homophobic or anything like that but I need you all to discuss this. And need to know if any of you play characters of the opposite sex? And your views ;)

a lot of people play characters of the opposite sex and i think most players are aware of the possibility that the woman in her twenties they are talking to is played by a guy or vice versa.

i for one have more female characters than male oddly enough.

Update on views:

For a while I had all male chars, but then yeah, I added some variety. Something I noticed, my male chars all die quicker, one way or another, offsetting the male dominance in percentile of my char's.

Though I don't really see what's wrong with playing female char's, as I admit to myself, but none of mine have been involved in a sexual relationship, because I'd feel very uncomfortable doing so. But, it's just a game, and just roleplay.

Haha cheers all. What I needed to know. I'll just carry on as I am then. I'm not playing the game for sexual relationships anyway so I think I'll be fine and dandy lol

Yeah, about half of my charries are male. The sex listed doesn't necessarily say much since I think Jonas is quite feminine for a guy sometimes and then again Jaina acts like a guy mostly and so did my late Maryan. Plus some of my charries are too new or neglected to have distinctive sexual personalities. I don't think I'd have any trouble roleplaying a sex scene as a man, but my male charries haven't yet approached anybody that way.

Playing female characters is as easy as men. My friends say it is disturbing when my female characetrs enter relationships with other men. They just don't understand!

I hear ya. I've been toying around with one of my female characters entering a relationship. The way I figure it... it fits what I have in my mind as her personality. She's looking for companionship, and I'm not gonna cheapen my idea of her just b/c I'm a straight guy. So I'll roleplay to the best of my ability and see what comes of it.

I figure it'll just be a challenge to overcome. Kinda like the Turing Test... can I play a woman well enough to make the relationship work?

*shrugs* It's just a game. 8)

If you change you mind, I'm sure you can RP your way out of it.

I think if you're immature enough to care whether or not your character's better half is indeed a woman or a man, then you shouldn't be playing Cantr at all.

I agree. Although I feel only guys have these problems. I have male characters and I am very comfortable with him having relationships with a woman. I am very straight and would never go that route in this life time so I guess I'm just a very good roleplayer. I play him like if it was a man playing him. It can get very hard at times (not that you nasty), but I hang in there and if I think I can't handle anymore I just get out of the relationship.

I have a female character in a relationship... it's hard, not because it's awkward playing a woman, but just because i'm awkward in those situations in general.

I agree. My female chars, if they're in a relationship, just don't do the 'heavy RP' so beloved of certain relationshipped couples. It's not my bag.

It's not really a question of immaturity, Sammi. Some people are more uncomfortable than others when roleplaying stuff they don't know. It's not our place to judge why they're uncomfortable.

Personally, I think it's easier for women to figure men out than vice versa... our beauty is in our simplicity. 8)
