Improve the People tab!

Postby RedQueen.exe » Thu May 19, 2011 3:43 pm

Is there any particular reason that the people tab can't show characters that are working vs idle, chars that are hungry, and chars that are hurt?

People might complain less about leaders as much if leaders did their jobs better, and leaders might do their jobs better if we cut out more of the busywork.

It sounds like a useful idea but I wonder if it would make it too easy for people to check that slaves aren't working on something they aren't allowed to.

I'm sorry, I'm of the very firm belief that if we're going to allow people to do something, we should allow them to do it as easily as possible, or not at all. I REALLY don't like the idea of using extra clicks to deter IG behavior that we're still going to allow anyway. If we don't want to let people see what project someone is working on, then take it away completely.

Additionally, I understand that we want to narrow the advantage of people that have more time to spend playing the game. This is a small step in that direction.

Besides, while I'm no giant fan of making things realistic for realism's sake alone, if a slaver took a look around a room it would be immediately obvious to them if someone was working on something they weren't supposed to.

Besides x2, I didn't say show what they were working on (though I support that too but expect it to incur more resistance), I only want to know IF they're working or if they're idle. Reason being, if someone isn't working, I try to find out why. I pay closer attention to keeping them fed, and try to figure out if they're just getting bored and there's something I can do to improve their situation.

90% of the time, happy characters work on something. If people stop working, I want to figure out why so I can correct it before the town eases into a slow death.

I suppose you have a point there. And in the past, characters who were wounded had a :| or :( icon instead of the smiley face depending on severity but it broke when starvation and physical damage were separated. It would be nice to have that back, or another indicator.

I would like the hungry/hurt indicator. It would be useful for some of my leaders.

I support this suggestion 110%. I like this suggestion so much, if I was some kind of jerk, I'd find a way to take credit for it. Simple stuff like this is what will retain more players.

i dont think it will. i think it will determine who becomes a leader and who doesnt. personally, i have a great deal of respect for leaders who care enough to go through and chek their people. if its made easy, then theres less to distinguish good leaders.

Less bad leaders to rant about? Then I support the suggestion

I'm sorry, using busy work (i.e. which player has the most time to waste in front of their computer) to distinguish who is a good leader is a load of malarkey. What makes them a good leader is that they care to check in the first place. If checking is made that much faster, that gives them more time to do other leader things, meaning they can be better leaders. Less clicks also means less server load = faster game.

What would be good is if someone with some html skills could whip up a sample page with the added features.

It'll help retain that segment of new players that comes in, sees the amount of clicking it takes to actually "see" anything in the game, and leaves.

do new players often care to check on everyones status? that is, their health and working status? from what ive seen, players who start caring about that stuff have already played and have no problem with the idea? so therefore, it wont effect new players, but rather ones already semi-/fully committed?

im not doing a good job of explaining my thoughts.

It can't hurt. If they want to see people's descriptions, they'll look. I currently don't bother much with descriptions because it takes too much effort to read them.
