Booze

Postby Doug R. » Thu May 12, 2011 2:49 am

Just random nonsense from my tired brain. I've wanted, in a serious way, the Cantr code to handle intoxication for a very long time, but I admit that it's not in the gameplan. So, my characters are stuck pretending to drink their booze and get drunk. But I've been doing it so much lately, that I've got to thinking about the physiology of it all. Characters don't consume the booze unless they're hurt. However, very few people are going to wound themselves just so they can properly RP drinking, so that leaves us with swishing. Characters put the booze in their mouths, swish it around, and let the alcohol absorb into their system through the veins under the tongue. Real people can't do this, but Cantrians can. They then, very discreetly, spit it back out. Eventually, all the alcohol will be absorbed. Some purists may dump the booze after, but little do they know that if you let it sit around long enough, it re-ferments and regains its potency. And it's very potent! As little as 50g can get a character roaring drunk. A little goes a long way!

Drunk via osmosis....or something like that. I love it.

Let's just skip the osmosis and hook the booze up directly to our veins.

If I was more tech savvy and could post a picture of me right at this moment, you would see that I have a beer....oh yes...sweet, sweet beer how I love you.

One of my characters got roaring drunk off of 36g of wine. Needless to say, they're very much a lightweight.
My other characters can handle their alcohol fairly well.

The absorption stimulates nerves in the throat which can give a burning sensation, kind of like how ice cream can give brain freeze.

I think what I find most irritating is that it takes almost two hundred grams to make a fluid ounce, and an ounce of wine won't get you drunk. A fluid ounce will barely even wet your whistle, but it would take years to produce enough alcohol to realistically get a character sloshed - I mean, sure, if you're chugging vodka or moonshine or something, you'd probably get buzzed on an ounce or two if you're a complete and utter lightweight, but that would still take a few years to accomplish with production rates like they are - and vodka/whiskey/moonshine don't even exist in Cantr, anyway, so yeah.

Everyone is condemned to sobriety always.

If you consider that a char can live off of 200g of potatoes a day.... I don't think it would require much alcohol for them to get intoxicated.

Yeah, I've always thought that Cantrians were really, really tiny. They live in houses built out of 10,000g of stone and eat 200g of potatoes a day, toting swords built out of less than a pound of metal.
