Ships

Do they get effected by weight, like amount of resources and people on the ship?

I'm almost 100% certain they do. I have a char in a sloop (With a mast and some kind of sail) that is packed, and longboats speed past him. :)

So if I place many sails on my boat, it may compensate for the burden? I have a feeling holds are dragging down the speed quite much, for some reason.

the weight of the holds should barely have much effect on their own, passengers, cargo and if you have other boats attached would add up, how much effect depends on what ship it is, and.. you can have 1 full set of sails

Ah, so I can't have endless amounts of dinghy attached then...

I think you can if you dont want it to move. I have been on a ship I had to re dock and cut some ships loose just so it would move faster than a snail.

I was recently wondering about this too. What all is included in the speed calculation when it comes to movement?

Factors that could be included:
  • Weight of cargo on deck
  • Weight of people on deck
  • Weight of cargo in holds and cabin
  • Weight of people in holds and cabins
  • Weight of holds and cabins
  • Weight of rigging
  • Weight of the other boats docked to the main boat (this can include everything mentioned above)
  • Speed of the other boats docked to the main boat

The speed of the other boats I doubt is relevant, and experience also seems to show this.

All the weights you mentioned count. How much they reduce the speed of the vehicle depends on the weigh factor, which is a vehicle specific factor.

And the weight factor is listed on the wiki page for each vehicle.

From my experience the parts that have the most effect (for least gain) are other vessels docked to your main ship. Even though the hold's, cabins and cargo will still affect your performance, you can balance that out with the sails.
Towing lots of other boats is extra dead weight, no point doing it other than if you need 1 for docking to other ships/land.

And that's not an invitation for changes to be made and ****-up boats in the same way that everything else in the game is gradually being screwed up.
