Story: Man comes to wall, there is a door. Door can not be open, even with brute force. Sadly, the door was unlocked the whole time.

I wanted to collect Warhammer 40K pieces, but I realised I had no money. I have a story of my own, too. I was at a Games Workshop place with a friend of mine, and the worker there was away painting (What else to GW employees do when they have nothing TO do) - and he was like "You guys wanna play a game of 40K?" - So we just played. We never even touched a 40K piece, we were just there to see what Miniatures were all about. Trust me, we were instantly hooked. I just wish I had $140 to get the Starter Set :(

Yes, it's a really complex and interesting game.

I like the older rules better though...where there is more RPing to it.
Every soldier has very individual equipment and you don't need huge armies to play...small skirmishes with 10-15 warriors on each side could be made into a very interesting scenario.
Eat the invisible food, Industrialist...it's delicious!

Hah. A few options for you then:

The Kill Team rules on the GW website (www.games-workshop.co.uk).

Mordheim.

Or, for the real detail - Inquisitor.

2nd ed was a bit more complex and fun, but a game sometimes take a month to play... 3rd ed can play a game in just 1 evening.... And don't get starter set /rule book now, they are putting a new one out in september... (the starter set was crap anyway, the two army was so one-sided....)

What, 10 marines and a land speeder vs 20 dark eldar? Yeah, not a goos mix.

Now, what would be good this time round is IG vs Tau!

Why is that not a good mix? The marines will win, LMAO (Dark Eldar suck so bad man, they have measly armour points. Roll a friggen 3 and BOOM, woops, sorry, my bullet went right through your chest plate!)

4+ is pretty good.

Try playing Orcs one time - 6+ all the way!

No, it's the unfair mix of troops.

Bear in mind marines are severely underpowered - one marine really is one marine, while one eldar represents 3ish, one orc probably 6, and one guardsman is about 10 or 15 people. Even then, marines are underpowered.

The Marines also have superiour armour (Basic Armour: 4+ roll to hit, 4+ roll to damage), as well as their good weaponry, specifically the flamethrower, bazooka cannon, and meele weapons. Less may be bad, but if you can keep them defended with the landscape, you can kick some mighty ass :D

Hmm, what are you talking about? 4+ armour? Or may be you are talking about 2nd ed, right? I didn't play much (at all) during 2nd ed, models just sat on my shelf after they were painted (and craply too.... I think you'll understand...)

I've been interested in collecting a 40k army. But personally I'm a big fantasy buff, so I collect WHFB.

I play Empire (2000pts) Dark Elves (nearing 2000pts) and I've got a smattering of Chaos demons and mortals.

If I were going to collect a 40k army, what would you all recommend? I was thinking Orks, but I don't know how they stack up against everyone else.

My 2 point Space Marine army would KICK YOUR ARMY'S ASS!

...It's a single Marine with a Plasma-Pistol...

That's -my- entire collection.

...I can still win battles...

...I just rely on cheating...

Player: "HA! I blew up your single Marine! I win!"
Me: "What are you talking about? Haven't you read the Marine Codex?"
Player: "Not entirely."
Me: "And I quote, in the event of having a 100 point or less army, all units are allowed to respawn the amount of times your points minus 100."
Player: "So... 98 times?"
Me: "Correct."
Player: "Damn, so unfair"

-----

And believe me, I've done that twice before ;) Works great on little kids.
