i beleive certain african tribes used to make primitive body armour out of bones and wood for who know's how long. not the nest for stopping modern weapons or steel blades but against clubs and spears they did the trick by spreading the impact over a larger area.

Yes spectrus is right, bone shields were use as he said to spread the impact over a wider area and therefore lessening the impact.

But didn't they have hide covering the bones?
A smack from a club on a shield made purely by bones feels like it would shatter the entire shield...

Yes, perhpas they should add a little hide or a small amount of rope to it so they can have bindings.

Or perhaps a more easily accesable substance than rope, what do you need to make rope?

Well, the Buckler has Hide on it for that exact reason. It's merely wood, and hitting it would vibrate it. The Wooden Shield, we can assume that it uses more wood, so it's "thicker". But the Buckler uses less wood, so the hide kind of absorbs the blow.

If you'd like, I can add hide to the bone shield as well? It would give hide more uses, too. So, it's win/win, really.

there are still civilisations in the world that arn't very far advanced beyond caveman days.the bushmen of the kalihari still use bone and wood tools and weapons since these are the hardest substances in there world. if you want some info on them and a good laugh watch the movie"the gods must e crazy" is a bit old but the stuff about the nushmen is still true of lots of groups of them to this day. there be remote tribes in parts of the amazon who still live in stone age times. until white settlement the aboriginies of australia where a stone age society. some of the remote tribes in new guinea still live this way aswell.

Anthony>

That would be excellent :)

Spectrus>

I wouldn't use "The gods must be crazy" as a movie to learn anything about the bushmen :)
Sure, they are primitive, but still...that movie is a bit much to use as grounds for facts...
