Paper making

Postby .::. MysticGötén .::. » Fri Jul 09, 2004 12:10 pm

Considering almost everything has become harder to make or gather (like the iron and salt for steel and weapons)
How come paper is still free and always available? Isn't there suppost to be a machine which is needed to make paper?
Like the priestst did in the old days.

It would make it a lot more realistic but then you would also need to make things to write with, like a feather and some inkt so writing is possible, or a pencil and a gum in order that the note can be edited.

Maybe this makes it a bit hard to get paper, but it would still be sweet.
Perhaps this stops the making of meaningless papers which are dropped on the floors in cities making it a mess on the ground

If it has been suggested before I am sorry, but I couldn't find anything similar to this idea.

This has been discussed before, and the reason that paper hasn't been complicated is because notes and word of mouth are the only ways for chars to communicate. Jos was really adament when starting the game, and since then, about societies needing and being able to communicate. IF paper was ever complicated as other objects in Cantr have been, it will likely only be after superior communication (like telephones) have really infiltrated the societies.

I personally look forward to a time when there might be professional book binders and paper makers and such, but that will not be in at least the near future.

I see...

telephones would be a fantastic idea :D . But before that will be implemented if it gets approved would take a long time  .
I guess some sort of phone line would be made like when you improve roads. LoL perhaps even a satelite for mobile phones
But how would you phone some one?

telephones would be kind of cool, kinda like private messages on this forum. instead of a full-on conversation, it could be more like a series of voice-mails... or not.

what i think would be cool is a way to destroy notes. is there one already that i don't know about? maybe a trash can. or the ability to burn them in fires.

Am I wrong, or can't the content of notes be destroyed merely by editing them?

It's annoying that someone makes something useless uneditable, for example a list of resources you can trade (since after you've done the trade, the list is completely useless since you do not have all the things mentioned anymore).

Jos stated he didn't 'like the idea' of notes being destroyed, because of historical value. However, he does realise that there are copies of notes, and useless ones, that should be destroyed.

There IS an item that destroys notes, however, it is not public yet - I want to have it tested to make sure it works properly before handing it out, so that there doesn't end up being some huge bug of some sort.

Well, you could make the players write on bark or stone tablets, these would be "uneditable". then you have paper, which is water + wood, then they could be uneditable, but can be destroyed by wetting them with water or burn them with fires... wouldn't that be a better idea?

reed and water would be more realistic then wood and bark as there are many processes in turning wood into paper. reeds water and press would make servicable writing materials but

An easier, faster and clearer way to destroy notes: throw them in the fire. a fire place or oven that would help :D .
