Re: Top 10 things that annoy you about Cantr II
I have four "married or engaged characters." Two were married in the ceremony of the local religion. One involved mutual blood letting and an oath. The other was just mutual agreement (but did involve rings, though the material they were made from was more significant than the actual item). Regarding the one that was the blood-letting - they don't refer to each other as husband and wife, or refer to themselves as married.

Yes, but chars aren't "born" in Cantr. They're 20 years old, they should have clothing. Or at least have the option to put on basic clothing immediately.
Yeah, but they're just as good as born. If you spawn, you really shouldn't know anything about the world or have anything when you spawn. It would be kind of ridiculous.

You forgot players who write too much information when they emote, like *smiles at X*, when X just came from the port into a location he/she's never been before. This is specially an issue when your character's a criminal.

This is the world of Cantr, ridiculous is commonplace here, and being around since 2008, you should know this!

Re: Top 10 things that annoy you about Cantr II
It might be a good idea to split the topic to discuss the marriage and relationship issues.
I think monogamy is meant to protect people and make things more simple. I currently have one in a threesome relationship that used to be a foursome before one died and it's difficult to ensure no one feels left out, plus it had to be made clear that people in the family shouldn't sleep with outsiders anymore, at least not before asking the others if they'd be okay with it.
Also had another one in a threesome relationship but the other woman died, and I think we're doing better as a couple despite occasionally missing her a bit. Imagine it's supposed to be a balanced equal relationship and you start fooling around with him because you're online at the same time, and later she wakes up and bites her lip, stands around looking generally insecure and mutters "maybe I should just go, you'll be happier without me". Major guilt trip.
And weddings seem to kill relationships, so it's probably better to just agree at some point that you are married, or not even discuss it and just be happy with what you've got.
A lenghtly example: Far away in the past, Jaina had a nice relationship with Ember as long as remained a secret. Then she had to get honorable and make it public. It just went downhill from there. They eventually had a wedding, but no one was online when it happened. The first one had to be cancelled because Ember slept through the set date. I think they changed their clothes to something nicer, and maybe exchanged some vows outside, then quickly left on a wedding trip. Ember fell asleep druing it and had the sleeping sickness more or less for the rest of her life. Then she finally died and Jaina was awfully depressed, thinking she would soon follow, stored the dead body in her room for a long time and scattered daisies around it. Then some dick came in and stole her clothes, so she had to be buried for decency's sake. Or actually I think first one dick stole her wedding ring and tunic, and later another dick stole the rest of her clothes. So Jaina was all never again, no way, a very gloomy and grumpy person. Then she met Twirdy and she's always had a soft spot for simpletons. Tried to keep it a secret with him but he got a bit drunk at the Zuzi festival and made it public. She was mad at first but then when no one disapproved of it, she didn't know why it had been so important to hide it in the first place, and later he proposed to her and for some reason she said yes because it just felt right. But she didn't like the word wife because it sounds somehow demeaning, so they were just using the word spouse instead. But again things went downhill, different way than with Ember, Twirdy seemed to want more attention than she could give so it lead into disputes and hurt feelings. When he had a heart attack, the first thing she said was something like "it wasn't working out anyway".

Re: Top 10 things that annoy you about Cantr II
On this account I've had 3 in serious relationships and, coincidentally, none are actually married. It was either assumed or outright discussed that they wanted intimacy and didn't want to share the other with anyone else. None refer to their significant others as a spouse, wife/husband or any labels really. It's sort of just s/he's with me and that's that. Another of mine just sleeps with whomever and doesn't get emotionally involved.
During my first attempt at Cantr I had one married and the arrangement was based on local custom. The ceremony, if you can call it that, was based on family tradition and wasn't terribly similar to RL weddings. I thought it was really cool and I'm sorry to discover that history and tradition is gone from that location.
I have noticed that trend of things fizzling after chars get married. Maybe it's that same theory of attaining a goal then having nothing more to work toward.
But, yeah, I can see how monogamy would just be simpler (and safer in some cases!).

I can't say that any of my character's relationships fizzled after marriage.

This must be pretty situation dependent, or maybe your char just seems suspicious somehow.
You really hit the nail on the head for me on several of your other points, though.
2. Chars that think they are so important that they smother other awesome chars.
This. Though again, I think it depends on the situation...IMO someone with a little flair (and a lot of time on their hands) can manage to RP their way into involvement in almost any situation, even if not always in a positive way, but so many times I've seen promising newspawns or traders or dependable workers shoved off to the sidelines while the whole town just seems transfixed over someone's descent into madness or some theatrical relationship drama or whatever.
I might be a little guilty of contributing to this myself though, because sometimes I'll deliverately have my characters ignore something if they're all wrapped up in something else...my reasoning is they don't necessarily see every little detail the way I do, and probably wouldn't notice some random person asking a question or sighing sadly down at their work...and sometimes they might notice but simply not care enough to get involved.
5. People that want to trade but have no clue the value of things or players too lazy to at least help the other player with the math.
And this! Well, actually...what bugs me is kind of the opposite. I'm sick of traders who know the exact worth of their wares down to the gram and who are so slavishly devoted to the dow system they won't even consider things like supply and demand or travel time or tools and machines, and actually get irritated if you try and bring it into the conversation.
No, I am not going to trade you this rare, useful resource I lugged halfway across a continent for the exact 1 for 1 gathering rate of your local one. You can just travel halfway across the continent yourself and gather it if it's so trivial to do.
7. Chars that wake up -everyday- and asked what happened when they were sleeping. I rped that already, sorry.
Also this! As well as characters that announce that they're awake every time they log in. The only time I ever find the 'I'm sorry, I must have fallen asleep' thing to make sense is if they've been out lot longer then is usual for them or if they suddenly go quiet during some important event.
10. And for my last complaint, chars that dont pay their workers!
This, with the addition of people that don't play they're workers. They don't even have to speak, just some sign of life maybe once a day or so would be nice. Not getting paid can at least lead to some interesting RP if your char is the type to get angry about it.
And finally, since this is turning into another 'characters that irritate yours' post when the point of the thread is things that annoy you about Cantr, I would have to say the inflexibility of the tech tree (though it's a lot better now than it was back when it first started annoying me, at least in offering alternative ways to do things), and of course, the whole strength/dragging/key holding thing having the final (and only) say in the outcome of every conflict situation.

Double post, but, it annoys me that Cantr keeps freezing and crashing my browser whenever something important is going on.

Re: Top 10 things that annoy you about Cantr II
If the events page is too long (and it doesn't have to be very long to do this), then the page works fine until I get to the very bottom of the page with the go back to player page and manufacture item buttons (as well as hide/show all events). If I accidently scroll down to far, the page freezes, for a few seconds if there's not that many events. If there are a ton of events and that happens, I just close it and log back into Cantr.
So now I often go to the inventory page first before going back to the player page.

This also happens where there are to many individual items lying around. Places that leave tons of notes out will jam a page when looking for dead bodies, maps, food from containers, ect. Those lovely hording towns that have massive amounts of needles, bones shields, and hide scrapers all piled into the same room they keep the good stuff in. Stop that! *smacks little cantr hands*

I've also had it happen with very long maps, but for me the events page seems to be the main problem. I haven't had much problem with large storages fortunately.

I can just be reading through the events page, and suddenly the whole thing locks up on me. I think it might happen when a new event pops up, but I'm not sure.

The most problem I have with my screen freezing on me is when I press the show all button. It will freeze on me. Other then that I don't seem to have an issue.

Marian, one way to test that is to go to your user preferences and disable "javascript contents" and see if that helps. Could at least narrow down the problem. Maybe your browser needs an update or an update caused the issue. People were grumbling at work about a Firefox update giving them a few headaches but I haven't noticed anything major with mine.
