2 Cantr Hour Work Days

Postby Ryaga » Thu Jan 06, 2011 6:26 pm

So I'm starting to hate having to be cooped up inside when doing work, can't we do something else instead?

I'd like if working in Cantr for a full day of work only required 2 Cantr Hours a day, and you could only work on one project a day. This would allow you to get a day of work done, and then wander off and have time to socialize and such.

I see your point, but I don't know, seems like that would requiring some pretty major rebalancing all across the board.

I know a lot depends on location, but if you know you're going to be at your computer awhile you can still do quite a bit of socializing during those three hour gaps, I've found...don't feel like your chained to that project the whole time when it's only that two or three minute window that counts.

How would it need rebalancing? You only get one dow a day, it's just shorter in span.

So working for two hours and then not allowing them to work on any more projects for 1 day unless they go inside and cancel it? That seems a bit weird to me.
I understand your point with working inside though, and that bothers me also. At least sometimes you can have multiple people working inside.

No it'd work almost like hitting does now. You press work, wait 2 cantr hours and your dow is done. You can't work again for a day.

That would mess up how long it takes to do something though, even though you can't work on something else afterwards. =/

Not to thread crap because I understand the desire to find a way to reduce the time people have to spend inside. But.... This would kill skills and a lot of efficiency in how you can manage projects now. An expert would waste time working on things they could finish in less than a day and an awkward person would either finish a job sooner or have to spend twice as much time on it. There are also projects that require odd times, from one hour to 75% of a day etc. Several other circumstantial reasons for spreading things out...

I'm finally learning that being inside all the time isn't that bad. There are ways to make it tolerable and some of my chars prefer it. Of course it's a pain when you need to be outside (low population and you need a guard or whatever) but it can still be worked around.

I think it's funny how everyone wants to get outside, yet then they complain about how noisy it is. Also, Jos designed Cantr for the majority of characters to be inside. If everyone stopped fighting the system and went inside, and if towns put all their machines in one place, the inside would be just like the outside. In fact, being outside would become boring.

Yeah, I've never understood all the buildings in town, yet everyone stays outside. It's kinda backward.

People spawn outside. People arrive and leave town outside. People have to be outside to gather resources. Etc., etc. There are plenty of important indoor activities, but the outdoors is clearly central in terms of game mechanics.

Buildings are these horrible lightless soundless sensory-deprivation chambers. Inner rooms are even worse, they might as well be black holes or portals into another dimension.

So, what you really need is a mobile phone...

Being inside would be less awful if it was possible to hear some things from the outside. Houses aren't completely sound-proof irl, when I'm at my parents, I hear kids playing outside, people mowing grass in the summer, at my own place I hear my annoying upstairs neighbor, I definitely hear if people are having conversations in the stairwell even though I can only make out the words if I go eavesdropping by the door. Although in Cantr it would be difficult to define which things are louder than others. And if something like a stone drill or smithing were ongoing sounds, they shouldn't generate events because that would be annoying. Instead maybe there could be a sort of a soundscape on the location page.

Maybe what we need is a building that is very open yet can have building type machines in it. It would have a roof and a floor but not much for walls. Then you should be able to see and hear everything, except overheard whispers outside. We could also add windows to current buildings, though I think what we could see and hear with windows (without glass) would still be limited.

I have a character who leads a town with most of its population almost always inside the main building, with a note outside saying where to look. With a large enough store of the resources to be found outside, in a relatively secluded town, there isn't much point in being outside.
At one time there was a similar case with another town, simply because inside is where most of the machines are.
However, I personally feel bad if I have to send someone inside to work, not that I would mind the quietness myself..but my characters often have to find things to do outside. I'm grateful that stone tables can be built outside.
So, seeing and hearing outside events would be nice.
