I am a lifelong sufferer of headaches and migraines. Because of a health issue, I can no longer take painkillers of any sort (though if the pain gets bad enough, there's a fairly good chance that I'll take the drugs, health issue be damned) and am reduced to molesting an ice pack, keeping the A/C on low, and drinking tea and coffee to help with the pain. Because of that same health issue, I am finding it difficult to drink tea or coffee and to eat anything, which I need to do before I drink, especially if it contains caffeine, because not doing so makes me sick. Not being able to squish a headache in the first day almost invariably turns it into a migraine and none of the things I can do allow me to squish the headache.

I don't get a headache. Yeah, I hear that. I also have suffered from migraines for the past 35 years or so, although luckily in my case they usually go away after a single course of ibuprofen. Haven't had to take anything stronger (although there was one time I had one that lasted three days where the only thing that finally cured it was a super spicy pizza. That is now my weapon of last resort). But yeah, if I don't treat the headaches right away, it develops into a full blown migraine (in fact, I have a headache this morning. Ibuprofen hasn't fully worked on it.) So, it is a real bummer if you can't take medicine. One thing I've heard (besides the spicy pizza that worked for me) is cold on forehead, while simultaneously using a hot washcloth on the back of the neck. This did not work for me, so I can't recommend, but if you want to give it a try....
Caffeine in and of itself can be a migraine trigger (as can the withdrawal from it), so you might want to try tapering off it. (Although you are absolutely correct that it can mitigate the pain).
