When I click on 'Build or Manufacture something' the page changes and up pops 'Error 404'.

This is a known error related to the search interface. At the bottom right you can click "old HTML build menu" and manufacture items using that interface.

Found it. Thank you.

Sorry for my ignorance, but I am quite new to the game. Once into the manufacturing page it says to make a Stone Hammer you need a wooden shaft, but I can not find where I can make this. Chances are I'm just blind, but a pointer in that direction would help me greatly!

You should be able to find them under "semi-finished products".

Unless the please wait... text is used elsewhere, it could be temporarily re-translated to "The JavaScript build menu is currently broken, please use the old HTML menu until it's fixed, thank you". That way it would be visible to everybody who comes to said page.

I've added a new tag for the message.
