Cantr time can run while the server is down?

The server wasn't down. It was more like unplugged from the web.

The forum is a different server, and domain (cantr.org). I did wonder a bit why the hacker didn't target the forum also, but I guess cantr.net, where the actual game is, is the real focus.

Sometime in the past, some people in this game made some powerful (in computing terms) enemies. If the 'attack' was that widespread, it is probably someone with the power to control alot of computers in remote (relatively) locations.

...or it was China.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ultimately, those of us who love playing the game are at the mercy of the events of the past, which are none of our business. Still, it kinda sucks don't it? I know it comes under different names to different demographics, but this is almost starting to feel like Kharma, retribution, or some other word not used in this post. So I have to cleanse my soul a bit:

I was the one that spilt the hot chocolate on our neighbors couch back in 1972.

Or Iran...or maybe N. Korea as they are fond of pissing people off.

Seriously though, bad players (those that cheat/cause disruptions) are bound to always try these things. If Cantr had a professional staff of network security analysts like the big name MMO's, this wouldn't be an issue, but as it is comprised of volunteers who spend their valuable time getting this game to run, it is a more daunting task. Cantr is a great game, and unfortunately, there are assholes out there that want to ruin it for us. So, to spite them, let us wait patiently, and then enjoy the game to its fullest when it is playable once again.

I don't understand any of this computing stuff... how 'attacks' like this can take place... nor do I expect I can get into the heads of those performing them... but...
...I do know that on the surface... at the 'player interface' if you like... the game just seems really ill fated at the minute.
:?

As tempting as it is to tell these 'attackers' to get a life..? This is their life. This is what they do, and the saddest thing is that I imagine that secretly... they actually harbour hopes that people actually admire them for doing it..?

Wankers..!!

There is also no real affordable way to prevent DDos attacks. There are ways to limit the amount of havok they can cause at no additional cost. However, if the number of computers doing the attack is large enough, no amount of free, preventative measures will matter.

The key to preventing a DDos is to stop it before it reaches the server.
