Re: When Cantr is down
It has been considered but as far as I know, Echoman has been working on some quick fix.

Re: When Cantr is down
It's actually the only long-term solution to the problem, but we can't expect to have any players left after such a process.

How long would that take if you would do that?

Re: When Cantr is down
Too many people might commit suicide then. But I still think you would keep a good amount of players. Though those that were already doubting if they want to play would quit. And the problem with that is mostly that the Cantr world would be way too big to make things active for new players. Thats also in general.

Yes, no one is suggesting that we wait that long, hence the quick fix Seko mentioned.

But maybe it'd be a good idea to do that anyway? Not immediately now, but slowly... as our resources allow

I still somehow manage to not do all the things I need to do. Now I just don't have Cantr to blame it on.

I sleep much more. It's good and much needed. *stifles a yawn and collapses in bed*

Is it possible to work on a copy of the code? Like go through, and rewrite it, as time allows. Then, once everything has been rewritten, swap it out?

Re: When Cantr is down
We do not want to open up the game with the current security flaws in it. That would just mean another hack and another week spent on chasing some script kiddie while the game is down, and we haven't moved an inch forward during that time. We have to fix the flaws first, and then verify that everything works as intended.

Re: When Cantr is down
Maybe Keegan meant, once the hole is plugged and it's secure, whether it would then be possible to undertake such a project on the side of having a runnable game, so after the mentioned timeframe there'd be a swap from the secured+working code to the new, secured+working+"unified" code...
If thAt's not what he meant, well, never mind then because I wouldn't ask such a question, I'd simply expect it since I'm the one and only real master of the universe... not that effeminate He-man, who kept getting into this rather uhm... same-gender frustrated relationship with Skeletor.
I mean, seriously... you're some poofy prince (of all things) named Adam... and you have a secret... which is that you run around in a fur loincloth wielding a huge magical sword to overcompensate... and your eternal "nemesis" is a guy who's all about the bone... surely, I'm not the only one seeing what that's really about, right?
But back to the issue at hand... yeah, as master and ruler of the universe, I'd just expect it to be so, rather than ask the question.
And double-back to the issue at hand... this is what I do when Cantr is down; I go into this mental state of... well... let's just say "being delusional".
And, in the last few days... I've:
- thrown a fit at Windows crashing for the gazillionth time on me.
Honestly, ever since Win98, their product line went downhill for people like me - people with brains, who like to fix computers.
Win98, we could still fix ourselves completely.
Thus turning a rubbish product into a stable one.
XP we could still fix ourselves too but that one already started to see any user input as being "the problem".
Then came Vista... aka "yes it's your computer but MS will decide what you can or can not do! SP1"...
And these days, we have Win7... aka "Yes, it STILL is your computer, but only by law... sort of... technically speaking. Honestly, we both know it's now truly MS property so stop complaining or we'll have that paperclip come back to do a colonoscopy SP2".
Which brings me to...
- installed a Linux distro on my laptop, and will be doing the same with two computers I'm building from canibalized computer parts.
I've professionally and through hobby had some previous experience with a few Linux distro's, but never took that plunge of going all the way with it until now.
Which leads to...
- Playing with the particular Linux distro that I've installed, learning how the little beast is wired.
And trying to make everything work right, hardware-wise.
Which is going so well that on the side I'm actually getting re-acquainted with some Python/PHP/Perl coding...
Oh, and in the last two to three days, I've been getting into SecondLife.
It brought me closer to God from feeling like a certain messiah who went nuts at a market in front of a temple.
Honestly... the stuff they try to charge money for out there, it makes the Dutch tax system look like kindergarten lol...
But I'll be honest, I didn't feel like Jesus very long.
After ranting and chewing out some of those vultures, I realized that... hey... maybe I could find a niche there too, and make some virtual income...
Virtual, because I wouldn't want to leech actual money off of other people who could use it much better on real-life things.
See, I'm really a good guy, you can vote for me as your next president, or prime minister, or religious leader, or... meh, just vote for me, because at some point I'll get there anyhow and then I'll remember all those who *didn't* vote for me... mheh... mheheheh... mheheh...
