The code consists of over 400 files that have been edited by various people that haven't paid much attention to what the others have contributed.

Still, a timely backup isn't that hard..
It certainly beats rewriting code that you haven't even found yet..

Oh, the code is not lost, the data from the database isn't lost either. The problem is that if it's made accessible through the web, the hacker can just use the same security hole again to muck things up until it's plugged.

Or is it just that it's so full of holes that it'll take ages to patch? (no offense, writing safe code isn't an easy task, and you're never done with it)
Everything is backed up, nothing is lost, except for the events happening between the backup and the hack in worst case.
As Seko said, we can't just bring everything back up, because the security holes would still be there. And as stated by Jos announcement we have to clear out all the passwords and at the same time clean up in the administrators roles, so that when we come up again, we would be more safe against this kind of no-life petty criminals.
It's going to take some time to saintize 9 years of legacy code and tidy up everything and so on...

Wait, it happened -again-? Some douche used admin powers to screw things up? I thought you guys cleaned up administrator roles last time it was hacked!

As far I know it was hacked and not admin powers this time.
There is no rule that says I can't post as much I want. I asked my lawyer.

Is rewriting the code to be consistent, easy to navigate and possibly holes-less even considered?
