I like this suggestion, though if you can see out people should be able to shoot in with bows.

If you implement this you should also do something to give the people outside a better chance as people inside already have the advantage.

maybe have the possibility to construct a lader outside of the tower and then being able to climb into it? I'm sure that idea can be fixed up and tweaked.

Instead of towers being used for this function, why can't we just use windows? Once a 'window' has been built into the main room (the one just outside town) you would be given the ability to see people outside, as well as be given a chance to overhear conversations.

As for towers themselves, if they allowed for the shooting of runaway thieves, then I am certainly on board for that!

To implement towers we need to "segregate" the ranged weapons and the meelee weapons, this would be great but may be difficult to do.

With the weapons divided in theses two categories, we could only use "ranged" inside the towers to attack outside, this would apply to attacks while traveling.

If you wanted to do that then you'd need to either lower the attack of the crossbow (and probably the rest of the bows too) or make a more powerful melee weapon (I pick katana). Otherwise crossbows would be way so strong and there'd be no reason for anybody to bother with weapons that aren't bows

You'd just have to handicap ranged weapons in melee.
