How to Win the Game

Postby Bowser » Tue Jun 08, 2010 2:02 pm

No one wants to lose a character they have put years of time, effort, and emotion into developing. No one wants their car to be stolen or their long time ingame spouse fall dead of a heart attack. If I own a bus, a galleon, a diamond stubbed sabre, and 100K pile of steel, do I then win the game? If I make a OOC CRB and group my characters in order to massacre a town, do I win the game because I cheated? If someone swims in the ocean when there is no obvious "swim" button available, are they doing something wrong?

There are so many more examples to list here, lots of hypotheticals, but I just wanted to point out (and I'm sure it has been pointed out before) that there is no end goal except the one you create. The game is the story and the story is being written. I believe the only way to Win the game is to create an interesting story, create a legacy that lives long after your character dies, or make a connection with another character. Sometimes the hero dies.

I think in Cantr you can say you Win the Game if you're enjoying yourself while playing.

I can't say I'm perfectly all right with losing characters, or having their property stolen, it always makes me even angry and upset, even if just a little bit. But, if packed in satisfying gameplay, it's not a tragedy at all. I try to look at every crash as an opportunity for a new rise. Having your property stolen may be a great opportunity for an exiting chase. Losing your charrie may be... not for me, but for other players, but still - a great opportunity for some interesting change in gameplay, too.

When you have an ancient character that when he/she dies, you don't get upset/sad/angry at all about it, you just go "he/she had a long and rich life" with a smile.

Then I will likely lose the game every time.

There is a bumper sticker labeled: "he who dies with the most toys wins"

My response has always been...."he still died".

I think victory comes from achieving whatever personal goals you had, and more so by having fun. If you wanted money, iron, sex, friendship, power, etc...they aren't worth it unless you enjoyed the journey.

Without a doubt, the way to "win the game" is to enjoy your characters, however that comes about. Alot of people lose sight of the fact that this is a Role Playing Game, and as such should be enjoyed.

Which is exactly why people get so frustrated by most pirates: a character I enjoy being killed for no other reason than they were there and another player has nothing better to do? That is when it becomes frustrating.

As far as I know, you can't win life. And as far as I believe, there is no end goal or anything either. I'm only 19 years in, but I'm still doing it! I feel that it would take away from the game if there was some kind of goal at the end....
And all that is now
And all that is gone
And all that's to come
And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

joo gets it!

You "win" at Cantr just like you "win" at any other MMO type game. You pretend to be the best there is and just say "I won".

Simple.

You win when everyone but you and your allies are dead.

I prefer to think of it as winning by understanding Cantr is not a binary Either/Or game, and realize it's a Both/And place. 8)
So we all win.

Cantr II is a social simulator. What is not working is due a problem in the society.
Cantr is like Vegas - what happens in the game should be in the game.

Forum discussions of players and their chars loving and hating mine, watching the back and forth always makes me smile.

Finding notes written by my char or about them as other chars, showing someone cared enough to move the notes around.

A few murders.

And some accomplishments I cant post or you will figure out who I play.

All of this I consider winning.
