Problem with Cantr solved?

In the thread called: "Cantr not working? Check here first."

No further damage should occur... Doesn't this mean that all that is left to do is to restore a back up? Or is there more I do not understand yet?

In other words I would really like an update. I hope it's not too much trouble and I hope I'm not bothering anyone with this.

Thanks!

ps. hey forgive me, I'm showing signs of detoxing.

PR is repairing and restoring damage that was caused (deaths and such).
ProgD needs to fix some security issues.

Theres still a good bit to do... I don't have any idea about how long its going to take though.

Does this mean cantr won't be restored by a backup?

It seems that way.

There will be no restoration from backup.

We have to "fix" the characters that were killed. We also need to change some issues with security.

What about the dropped things and notes from the died chars? Also what about the thieves that ran with those things?

That's included in "fix".

I know I shouldn't go this way and interfer with other peoples businesses, but I'm really tempted to do so. Wouldn't restoring a back-up be easier?

maybe the backup is too old (1 month, as an exemple).

As far I know they make a back up each day.

Anyone who's ever seen someone die ingame should know what happens to the person's items. They end up on the ground. If only one person dies in a location, there's no problem, we can either tell the person to pick up what they like once they wake up (if the location is securely locked) or give them everything from the ground and if there was something they didn't own or want to keep, they can drop it when they come to. But 17 people died outside in Doryiskom (one of them out of a natural cause). I think three people died in the dot building, and here and there in some other boats and buildings.

There has been something wrong with the backupping so the only useful backup we have is from January. The ones made after that are useless. That's why we can't have a rollback.

I've emailed everybody who lost characters (except Doug and edited, but Doug is busy irl and I've talked to edited on the irc channel) so everybody who's lost characters on June 1 and didn't have a natural reason for it should check their email and reply to it. Everybody will be revived by default, even if they had been idle for ages and might even time out when the game comes back online, but if people do not reply to me, they'll be restored without any skills and will get random ones like a newspawn when they try things out. Apparently the naming information and some skills will come from the copy made in January, so if you were spawned after that, you'll get the names of people who have named you (I think I'll put them in parenthesis or something, so that you can tell which names you've learned after the restore and which ones might be people who just caught your name but didn't introduce themselves). Also if you spawned after January, you'll get the skills you report to support, I won't judge you if you tweak them a bit, as long as they're not all expert.

Raw materials, coins and other stackables remain as "ghosts" in the database so giving those back will be easy. But I'm not sure at the moment if objects leave a similar ghost, so with shields and such, I've been just moving ones on the ground to people's inventories as they claim them. I might release a list of objects on the ground after people have claimed their own from memory, but asking people to rely on their memory in the beginning will make it less likely that somebody would claim they owned something even though they didn't even think about it before seeing it on a list.

Damn, that makes me feel relieved I don't have any characters.

I was thinking the same thing. I have chars that carry all kinds of random crap. I would never ever remember it all :P

Woah! This has created one hell of a headache for staff, not to mention A LOT of work!! Thanks to everyone working on cleanup.

Seko's post above makes me want to ensure I have a "file" on all of my chars once the game comes back up. I normally don't keep a list of skills etc for each char although I do know offhand most of their fighting skills and strength levels. The rest of the skills, I might know a handful or less for each char and that's usually only because I've RP'd them being exceptional or clumsy at a particular activity.

I am curious about the "security updates" that must be done if there was no incident of hacking. Suppose it could be one of those things that we can't/shouldn't be told. It just sounds odd.

It might be possible for some people to recover information about their characters by looking through Cantr pages in their browser cache. Go to about:cache then turn on "work offline" before going to any cache entries so they aren't deleted.
