Re: General Roleplay Discussion
I fail to see how the gross generalization (I'm aware some was joking) of various nationalities/countries has anything to do with the actual topic of roleplay or Cantr.

Re: General Roleplay Discussion
As an American, I enjoy making fun of myself and my country. There is plenty to which one can laugh.
But Ryaga, the Canadian 'rant' was hilarious. I have a good friend who is from canada and he loves to tell us (groups of friends) about any person, music, etc that is 'from Canada'. It has become a running joke.
As far as history teaching, its admittedly deficient about the rest of the world, though its kind of ironic when someone who admits that they know little about America complains that Americans know little about him. Maybe 'ironic' isn't the right word there, but I will be nice. The 2-3 times I have visited Canada have been alot of fun as our guide was a good friend of my father and he made sure that we brought a nice supply of the magnificent Canadian Venison back across the border. There is little rivalry for us with other countries, but often there seems to be one the other way around. I don't see alot of posts (other than Ryaga's hilarious satire) of Americans talking about other countries, usually us arrogant Americans talk about ourselves, thus proving our arrogance. But then again, what has this hijacked thread mostly been? People from other countries talking about Americans! Not only do some of mistakenly make ourselves the fulcrum of the world, it seems that other countries do as well. I haven't seen a single post of us talking about how (insert whatever country here) is full of arrogant snobs etc.
But the reason I think we may be taught mostly our own history and the laws and mores of our own states is because that is where we live. Before we can venture out and spread our arrogance and money into the rest of the world, we must first be able to nurture both of those qualities and more in our own locales. Just sayin. <---yes, thats a clue
Be well

Re: General Roleplay Discussion
Getting back on topic, slightly:
Does it really bother some people if a character emotes something mundane and non-game-changing, even if literal game-mechanics do not technically apply?
Example1: in some grassland or desert without the "stone" resource... You see a young man *Picks up a small pebble and tosses it towards the tavern wall in frustration* "Darn it, I said BahBah.
Example2: You see a young man twirl a few blades of grass contemplatively (in a forest with no grass-resource) and sighs.
I have seen such things get replies deriding such actions as invalid since there are no Stone/Grass in that town. My own personal take on it though, is that even in grassland, there are small pebbles. Not enough to build something stone-based out of sure, but a small rock is easily believable, and adds to the scene. Even in a deep forest, there's probably a blade of grass-like weed somewhere to fiddle with while being thoughtful.
It's the same sort of thing as trying to convince people that staring at the stars is dumb because it's not defined anywhere that there are stars. (I argue some jewelry catches the sunlight, so there is at least a sun, and thus, probably stars too, and quityurbichin about irrelevant details in otherwise nice RP.)

I have no problem with your examples, and if I did, I wouldn't make an issue of it in the game.

I think they are fine too...they are used to convey an emotion (anger, dejection, etc). Grass even grows in the sahara and pebbles are what? Maybe clumps of congealed sand would suffice, let just not roleplay whatever it is that caused it to congeal.

This made me lol. A char was recently wishing an overly friendly citizen would go behind a dune and release some tension.

Re: General Roleplay Discussion
I'm going to be exceptionally good, and not continue the previous off-topic discussion.
As for your examples, Nateflory, 75% of the time I would just ignore something which is not really feasible. Just because another player said it does not make it fact. However, if it is in the course of some good RP I will happily let it go. It is much to easy for people to lose sight of the fact this is a society simulator - social interaction (and fun RPing) is much more important than clinging to the absolutes of a rule, at the expense of people enjoying the game. That leads to many very good players leaving, as happening with repairs, skills, illness and other game mechanic changes which did not put the interaction & RP element first.

You better be exceptionally good. *wags finger*
I think those are acceptable, as long as it's not something too crazy. I mean, it's easy to imagine some pebbles or some sort of grass in most areas, even if it's not useful stone or grass. Of course it's dependent on the area you're in. I wouldn't agree to grass in a desert necessarily. But I'd pretty much ignore it if that were the place it was emoted in. If it makes sense within the area, then I might even bounce some RP off of that.

Re: General Roleplay Discussion
I personally think that it is a good thing to have characters with differing levels of rp ability, spelling skills, and knowledge of punctuation and grammer. In the real world some people are better able to express themselves than others. I see it as a representation of difference that exists in the real world.
Also:
Why is it that there is such disdain for people who are new? All of us were new once and all of us went through a learning process to become better cantr players. Rather than bashing others for poor rp, perhaps guide these characters (in a way that is role-played of course) to become better communicators in game.

Agreed completely. I used to be not rping at all for almost two real years. My chars didn't really have friends nor a relationship. And now I'm doing very well and I'm sure there are players we won't want to miss me from the game now.

Re: General Roleplay Discussion
I sort of cringe when someone climbs or sits under a tree in a location that's nowhere near a forest. And if my characters go swimming or washing themselves at the shore, I only rp the existence of a shore if there is sand in the location or if there's a notable yellow stripe at the shoreline despite the lack of sand. Otherwise it's either muddy or rocky.

Why can't there be a tree in a grassland? I just imagine it as not worth to cut it down. Sounds silly actually no I type this. But hey what about that forest without trees?

That doesn't sound silly, Arenti.
There are trees out on the plains- they're just very ugly, sparse, prickly ones. I'd say there could be a few trees in most places, except maybe deserts.

As there are locations that have apples, but no wood, we can safely assume that there are types of trees that are not suitable for building (or burning) purposes.
Pretty in pink.
