Re: General Roleplay Discussion
I firmly believe in that a person should emote visible actions and facial expressions, but not inner thoughts (although the metaphorical approach for detail (..."as if he had just eaten a spider") is fine). It is up to the observers, however, to roleplay through their own mental/physical filters, however. For example, a character who is blind will not see the emote at all, unless there is a sound component. A person who has an autism spectrum disorder might have a hard time distinguishing/understanding facial expressions (common example, might interpret fear as anger). A person who is paranoid schizophrenic might assume he was the target of the emote. A person who has had an abusive father might ignore all actions/speech by men, etc. etc.
(On a related but separate topic, I believe that all emoting in whispers that could reasonably be seen by everyone present should be done "aloud").

I have way more then a basic education and could really give a crap less about proper grammar or spelling. Everyone has something they are unskilled at, for some it is language.
It is comparable to saying "That person speaks with an accent so they must be dumb".
Ok I guess I do tend to think that about people with a southern accent
But back on topic
Actions and facial expressions are fine, but I don't want to see inner monologue. And OCC speaking is just annoying. I don't really care that you are going on vacation for 3 days, find a way to RP it! *Yawns and stretches* I am feeling really tired, I think I am going to nap inside for a couple days

How is people not bothering to use capital letters to start sentences (something even 3 year olds know) anything like that????
I'm sorry to hear that some people disagree with the common language structure that society has agreed upon. However, I find solace in the fact that the internet provides these people with some relief from the pressures of the 'real world', such as the chaos of having to forefill the daunting task of spending an eighth of a second to use a capital letter.

My only comment to this is to try typing in full sentences on an iphone or other mobile device. It's possible, but for the cantr-addict or world-traveler, I don't even notice a lack of lowercase. If I do, I tend to assume it's a quirk of the character (or a mobile device, like my friend uses to play), since there's only so much inflection that can be portrayed in text-only media compared to Real Life. I understand that some are distracted by it. Some people are also distracted by spandex on a less athletic body-shape.

Re: General Roleplay Discussion
My cellphone has a function that it automatically capitalizes the first letter after a period. Although then again, it doesn't have Internet but it works in text messages. I would imagine such a feature to be rather common.

Ahh, ok, that's nifty. Mine doesn't do that automatically. I'll have to look and see if it's an option to enable or some-such. Then again, I'm using a cheap Nokia. My friend uses a proper iPhone, so I'll ask him how it works. Good to know, but my point stands: I am in the opposite camp of the "lowercase is terribad" crowd. *shrug*

Re: General Roleplay Discussion
Typing in all lower case is easier to deal with than a complete lack of punctuation. If you catch me in a chatroom or talk to me on an instant messenger, most of my typing is done in all lower case. For posts here, emails, etc I consider it a common courtesy to at least attempt to follow the standards and make it easier for others to read my words.
Spelling and grammar are a completely different topic. Even someone with poor writing skills should know to use a capital for names and after periods. I suppose some on the internet consider it their identity, trademark, rebelling or whatever you want to call it, to buck the system.
I WILL ignore your character if you use type lik ur txting, l337 5p33k, MiX uP tHe LeTtErS lIkE tHiS, or other asshattery within the game. I do try to be tolerant and make allowances but there has to be a line drawn somewhere.
On topic: I still say thoughts should not be included in emotes, or at least minimally so. Prepare to deal with the consequences of other players using the OOC information against you.

well i mainly do it two piss people who are two uptight off. Honestly as long as I can understand what is being said I dont care how they say it. And language rules change all the time. I would guess if someone from 100 years ago read a letter written today they would be appalled at the incorrectness of it.

Re: General Roleplay Discussion
I find it difficult to understand text that's lacking punctuation and/or contains a lot of misspellings. Usually typing everything lowercase goes hand in hand with that. It might not be difficult to read something that's completely lowercase if the punctuation is adequate and there are no typos but it's hard to tell since I don't remember seeing such.

The two things that bother me most are when they don't use punctuation, and when they use text speak. Like, I don't have time for u.

Re: General Roleplay Discussion
I guess there is a lot to said for the character quirks in the game, and i also, I guess that people could remain sympathetic to how and why players choose to type as they do?
A very good example... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archy_and_Mehitabel
I write as I do because of personal issues that i choose not to share. They are however to do with use of the keyboard. If and when I write professionally, I use Office, which auto-corrects these things.
To be held to account as some 'inadequate' is a little hurtful, and do be prepared for me to call you a bigot as and when you challenge me on it.
On topic:
Yes, I do believe i see the merits of not emoting 'internal' processes, and if they would truly be invisible in-world. Otherwise, i may also accept that some of these internal processes are simply 'thinking aloud'. As such, they may simply be a way to express a 'quiet' statement with a little more creativity.
Learning... Thanks you.

Re: General Roleplay Discussion
I only don't like the non capitalizing characters because they are usually newspawn trolls. They can't be trusted. If a charrie is in their thirties or older then they are probably trustworthy enough. Well as trustworthy as a Cantrian can be. Even though I don't let this bias affect my characters, I still feel wary of them. Been ripped off a lot by people in this game.
Oh and at least capitalize your name! Goatman is a lame name to begin with, but when you introduce yourself as goatman it's even lamer.
