General Roleplay Discussion

Postby returner » Sun May 23, 2010 12:21 pm

I noticed a lot of threads relating to different elements of roleplay and thought I'd make a centralised one, especially considering I had a revelation re: RP.

Thought: Generally, players seem against roleplay which gives insight into a character's thoughts and personality. Ie, roleplay which a player's character should not be able to see. For example: 2500: John says: Hey all! *he grins, but secretly he is thinking that everyone is a douche. He laughs in his head*.

Generally as I said, people are against that sort of thing. However, I had a revelation.. Why can't Cantr be a story, or novel, for us players to enjoy and for our characters to live out? There's nothing wrong with that style of play, so long as your character doesn't use that information (though surely some who can't grasp the idea of role-play would, sadly).

Normally I'm against *he thinks* roleplay.. now, I don't have a problem with it. (but I'm not going to do it anyway because I don't want cheaters or poor rp'ers to use my character's thoughts).

What do people think?

It's been discussed before to have a place with "expert" RP'ers only. There something like this wuould fit. Maybe. In regular Cantr we have too many players that wouldn't grasp the difference between IC and OOC and would mess up all the time.

I'm strongly disagreeing with this line of thought. :)

I never mind it when it is -well- done, which it rarely ever is. I also (even if I ever tried the thought RP-which I doubt I would because I find it mostly disturbing) don't trust my fellow players not to use the information. I mean when you see someone go *Wonders what her name is and why no one is telling her* and Someone else goes "Sorry, i was busy, her name is Blah"...It doesn't give you ANY hope that players can be trusted to see each others thoughts when they're actually worth something and still act in char.

I don't even think it's a situation of "good" players vs. "bad" players. I've seen plenty of examples where players who are praised for their roleplay abilities emote thoughts or act on thoughts that others have emoted. It would have to be an environment not of "experts" but an environment of "agreement" where players sort of buy in to the rules beyond Cantr's current set. Even then, I think it's just human nature to have some bias if a char emotes their thoughts. How many people would honestly not react nor show any negativity toward a char who emotes *looks around for something to steal*? I'm sure there are maybe a handful who would allow the potential thief to do their thing, but I bet most would use the info to their advantage somehow.

I think it must be done by giving impression about thoughts. For example: *he examines the weapon and wrinkles his face like he is thinking it is useless*

*he watches the people talking around him and then grins towards the half built room like he is thinking it'd be the perfect place to lock all those whose thoughts he can actually see*

Isn't that a perfectly valid emote with todays rules? I would have thought so.

I agree. But what I'm saying is okay (in a world of expert role-players) is this:

*looks at him with an expression of extreem loathing and agitation, and thinks about killing him on sight*

No.

I mean, yea, "expert" RPers would not use that to their advantage and stuff... But what would be gained by that? Where would be the fun, in knowing that he is thinking that? It's more fun to figure out the puzzle. I mean, yea, I know you're talking about in a sense writing it out as a book, but it comes together as a book without those explicit thoughts being there. You don't need an overall view to figure out the way it's headed.

Not even in books do they always reveal a character's motivations and thoughts that expressly unless it is a central character. I would kind of see that as bad writing in general the way it is presented there, assuming all the characters in the book/story, even the most minute ones, had their thoughts just out there in the open that way.

Hmm.. you have a good point.. It's like movies that explicitly outline the plot through dialogue..

Hmmm, I'll have to rethink this..
