More Stone Tools

Postby Lone Wolf » Thu Jun 10, 2004 2:53 am

I was thinking that it would be nice if we had more stone tools. Being able to make a stone axe would be nice. It wouldn't be as effective of one made of steel, but it could be better than using your hands. Maybe you could gather 450 grams of wood per day. I know not much, but that little bit extra, could really help a forest village that is just starting out.

As well I'm sure there could be a lot more tools made of stone. Any ideas of some of them?

I think you should make stone tools use little (well, same as steel or iron ised) but make it like 10 tmes slow, since after all, you are trying to carve a raw piece of stone which takes a long time especially with hands.

A stone "shovel" would be good. Requiring a steel tool to make a fire pit is kinda bogus when really all you need is some sotone and wood. Fire pit should be one of the least technical items to have to build in the game.

Well, programming would be needed for these since there isn't programming yet that makes a difference between the quality of a stone shovel and the quality of a steel shovel.

Lone Wolf: Your amount is unfair:

Collecting
Note that in one day one person can only collect 300 gram. The number of turns will be rounded upwards. The end result will have a random deviation (max 20%) of the amount you ask for.
If you have a axe, you can collect 600 grams a day.
If you have a 3/4&nbspaxe, you can collect 480 grams a day.
If you have a battle&nbspaxe, you can collect 450 grams a day.

*note other errors too* A stone axe shouldn't be the same as a battle axe. Maybe 350 is a better aproximation.

I wouldn't mind continued stone machiens as well =))

We also want to keep somewhat of a realism so I don't think a stone axe would be possible but a stone mallet.....

Stone axes ARE possible, IRL. As are stone mallets. The latter being called a "hammer"...

Never seen a flint axe before?

Lets look at the Tomahawk. It was made out of Stone, and was a good weapon too. (I had an authentic Black foot Tomahawk) it was good for cutting trees, but not as good as a steel axe or Hatchet.

The Blackfeet's tools were very effective, and they were the major power in region I'm in
They were perfectionists, and made things with pride and very much skill

Funny that you mention that. You see the Tomahawk that I had came from a Black foot Rez, Near High River Alberta. They use to Travel south, following the animals migration path. That takes them into Montana

:D It does...
The Rez these days is pretty much a ghetto
No offense or anything, but it's the truth... garbage everywhere, strays, people killing each other on a weekly basis... Attempting to get a position in the Tribal Govt to help their families... It's corrupted and a pretty bad mess...

Ahem, back to stone tools..
The arrowheads are really neat too..

Time for my comments.

No. The point of the Trowel tool is to work with stone (Smoothen it or something). Why would you make a tool out of stone that works on stone? It's like making a jello cutter out of jello.

A stone "shovel" would be good. Requiring a steel tool to make a fire pit is kinda bogus when really all you need is some sotone and wood. Fire pit should be one of the least technical items to have to build in the game.

I agree with this, but how do you hold stone together, exactly? We're not having players harvest large rocks. Just mere grams of stone, pebbles mostly. Although I can see where you're going, all of you, especially the Stone Axe and Stone Shovel. I agree with needing a Stone Shovel, but not a Stone Axe. There's already three axes in the game, and to add another to gather more wood, then it would unbalance current mechanics.

As for Arrowheads, not until we get arrows in general will there be any type of tips.

I'd like to see more varying quality tools. There are things like the 3/4 axe vs. the true axe, but they both use steel. I really like the idea of different resources being used in the construction to result in a different quality of tool. Stone vs. Iron, or Iron vs. Steel, or Wood vs. Stone, just these types of things. This allows lower tech level societies, or people, to build tools, and be more productive that they would otherwise be, but still be less than they could be at a higher tech level. It would also pull a little away from the godliness of the two metals, iron and steel.

Programming, is there any work in this direction?

Or even, where are you working to?
