It never is.. That makes it even worse Misato.. Let me give you a story and I hope it helps..
My grandma rescued a cat, who was 14 or 15 years old and pretty much at the end of it's life.. It's previous owners were abusive to it it's whole life, the vet wanted to put it down. She decided to take it in and give it the best possible final years.. Whenever I went to her house, it would run from me and her and was generally scared.. About two months later, it slowly became more and more trusting. You should have seen it, about four months later it was absolutely adorable.. It would come up to me, 'talk' to me, purr, sit on my lap.. It was so intelligent and so cute, so trusting. You could see it was so happy. It was so loyal. My grandma had given it the best life it could ever imagine, safe from the previous owners, and you could SEE that it appreciated it. It slowly grew sicker and weaker and grew more affectionate, until it died about 5 weeks ago.
Animals genuinely show appreciation.. they remember things, and can compare one thing to another.. Such as it's old home to it's new. I have no doubt your dog absolutely loved you, absolutely appreciated the kindness and compassion you definitely showed it. It felt safe in your home and you are a better person for it. I'm sure it passed away quickly and painlessly and please just remember the good times you had with it, and most importantly, remember how happy you would have made it. Sometimes we undervalue the emotions of animals and this is fundamentally wrong. You've done a great thing for it. 5 days of living with you was infinitely better than a life lived with those abusive, careless assholes.
Your dog will be eternally grateful for that. It died living in a better place.
