If we are going to do something like change around the dynamics of fighting, we need to consider the fact that Cantr is still not a rank up game where people are rewarded for being online more often to level their character up.
Rather, we should allow for people to pursue training through a tick-based mechanism so they don't actually have to do it for a project or do it repetitively.
For example, we could have a tick that archery trains people simply by having a bow on them, or weight trains people simply by having a weight on them; much in the same way people have an eating tick that allows people to eat, simply by having food on them.

Yes, like a punching bag or something. Agreed, thought it had been suggested several times before though.

I'm saying to have a "fighting skill tick" where if a person has weights for example inside of their inventory, they weight train for the day.

I disagree. This would make skill increase more or less automatic. It would also train pretty much everyone equally. I mean how many of your characters wouldn't carry around a bow and a weight...?

I disagree, currently you can only hit people once a day and so only train once. Its not too difficult to get online once a day.

Re: Non-project training
I'm afraid I disagree with this idea, I thought you meant non-project like combat (ie it's instant.. ie punching bags could be attacked etc).
The two major issues are already highlighted by earlier posts:
1) Everyone would train up equally, thus making it pointless (unless you're really poor and can't afford the stuff)
2) It doesn't really solve anything, it's not impossible to get on once a day
and my own
3) Your idea is to prevent the unfairness among those who can't play all the time. But, you're forgetting that those who play frequently are more likely to have these 'weights' or training things, and thus will be stronger. It will reward them automatically and they'll become far superior to those who can't log on, thus defeating the purpose of the suggestion.
