Reclassify 'Storage space' and 'People space' in buildings

Postby returner » Mon Apr 12, 2010 1:11 pm

If it's possible, classifying and seperating 'storage space' for objects/resources/machines and 'person space' would solve a couple of 'minor' issues here and there, including that of blockading rooms/buildings.

Aren't they separated? Or do you mean that people weight shouldn't add to storage weight?

I mentioned the idea once that a reached storage limit should prevent you solely from dropping and dragging of recources, while only the person limit should keep you from entering a room. He probably means something similar.

This would definitely get rid of the issue of bodies (voluntarily or involuntarily) blocking rooms and vehicles .

I'm all for that. Room blocking with junk is just an annoying side-effect of game mechanics imho.

The anger my char feels at having dead bodies in his cabin may be felt quite soon by some poor unsuspecting people.!

Now, as to the suggestion:

Since there is already two conditions for the room (one being weight and the other being character limit) Would it be possible to just have a characters weight (their bodies) set to 0 and simply use the people limit as the condition for entering buildings?

Setting a persons weight to 0 would cause problems with calculating the speed of boats. It would also mean than anyone could drag a dead body single-handedly. It might be easier to leave it the way it is and just don't check for the weight limit when entering a building.

Oh, I thought that dead bodies took on the characteristic of an "item" once dead and therefore weren't affected by the weight calculations of the living (mainly came to that conclusion based on the fact they seem to rot like food left outside on the ground)

As for calculating speed of boats (as well as other vehicles too I would imagine) I did not think of that.

Wouldnt an easy solution for that to be a workaround on how it is calculated?

Is it not possible for the vehicles to determine the weight speed ratio without people having a base weight? For example, while inside a building or vehicle, a characters weight is then set to 0. The vehicle would then in turn use the character limit counter to calculate weight/speed adjustments. For example, a tandem bike holds 2. While on the tandem bike, a chars weight would be made 0, but the bike would make the adjustment on its own. (ie. 1 person adds 60000g weight to the speed factor, 2 adds 60000X2 to it and so on)

And then, would it not be possible to then have the body become an "object" and therefor not subject to the "0" weight of the living characters?

Yes, I agree. Buildings and vehicles.

Well, people having a weight is not really a problem. The system would work as well wit people weighing the usual 60kg. It would just mean that you couldn't drop stuff if too many people were in a room. That's not really critical.

-Stone Building

Capacity:
People = 30
Total weight = 3,300,000 grams

30 X 60,000 = 1,800,000 grams (weight of 30 people, carrying nothing)

3,300,000 - 1,800,000 = 1,500,000 grams (New weight allowance in Stone Building)

There are 30 'slots' for character's AND a separate 'Storage weight limit'.
Adding 'slots' to buildings for characters, a little like resource slots, could make this possible. But then the weight -held- by characters must still be taken into account. This would make it so that you couldn't barricade large buildings with one person. But in a shack, for instance, you could force anyone entering to enter carrying nothing but could never fully keep them out.

If you pack your tandem full with small bones to the exact limit, where would your dead body object end up then? Temporarily adding the weight of a dead body exceeding the max capacity of the vehicle may cause unexpected problems.

Good point.

Okay, alternative, make the dead body an object with a weight value of "0" but make it a requirement that 2 or more people must be actively dragging it to be able to move it anywhere?

*sigh*

Yes...I now see why simply bypassing the weight check would be much, much simpler.

Why does it have to require cooperation to drag a dead body anyway, when in real life anyone could move one, given enough time? It sounds very artificial that there would be a check for several participants if the weight of a body was reduced to 0 or some other small number.

Seko,

Because I heard it mentioned somewhere else on the forums that it was made to be that way intentionally (the initial dead body weight) so that murders wouldn't be so easy to hide. That was just a compromise in that direction.

What I wanna know is why can't wheelbarrows help move dead bodies....$10 says I can kill someone and move him in a wheelbarrow, why can't my Cantrians :(

Then it doesn't work now, with wheelbarrows implemented. Also, it's difficult to kill someone singlehanded (unless you are a stronger than normal expert fighter, one-man genocide, but that's another story)
