Character Name Directory

Postby Anthony Roberts » Sat Jun 05, 2004 11:57 am

[WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING]

Scrolling below, you will be entering a WAR ZONE. Players have posted and will be posting their Character names, for reasons explained below. If you are uncomfortable knowing who plays what characters, stop now!

[WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING]

It is also assumed that you view this material in your BEST BEHAVIOUR and will NOT use the found knowledge to advance your or other characetrs within Cantr!

[WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING]

Okay, you can scroll down if you accept the terms. Leave if you do not.
(Please also be advised, the following topic is under investigation of the Players Department and may close down at any time! Or, probably will stay up. I dunno...)

----------------------------

I enjoy, when I role play, knowing who I'm actually role playing WITH - Because then you can get to know this person and their style, and find it easier to act out with their characters - Who agrees with me here?

So, I thought I'd start a post where players can post their character names (Or at least, those they want known to the public) so that other players can look here, find that character, and then contact the player using the forums PM system or otherwise.

Let us begin :)

Are you sure this is OK with PD?

Griogal, I personally don't see what they should have against it - some people even have the list of their characters as signature. Also, most of the time, you get to know who is playing whom by looking at people's posts.
The big issue is of course not to let OOC knowledge influence you in-game. But other than that, it's great to know whom you can thank OOC for killing one of your characters ;-)

Griogal's comment is not that far-fetched, though. It's of course easier not to break the Capital Rule, if you're totally unaware of who the player behind a certain character is.

I'm not happy with this thread, but I'll leave it to the PD to intervene if they think that's necessary. From my own experiences as a player, I found it always more interesting not to know who's playing who. And I had revealed a few of my characters to fellow players, which I regretted in about 75 percent of the cases.

I am aware, though, that many other players experience this in exactly the opposite way.

As Junesun pointed out in a gentle way: You abuse the information you obtain from this thread, you're gonna get in trouble. :P

Well, of course, it's assumed that people will use their best behaviour and judgement that they don't break the Capital Rule. Most people don't. When I talk to the players that I know of, we discuss events that happened with our characters - but mainly those characters that are dead, or have nothing to do with each other and probably never will, to prevent any mishaps. Of course, we also talk about things thtat happened between our own characters, and of course, since both us and our characters know about that already, it's no problem :P

Everyone has their own opinion, I guess, as to finding out as to who is behind the keyboard. I'm on one side, Thomas obviously the other. So I agree, if the Players Department decides against this, I don't mind at all.

Thomas,

You have a very good point there.

I do think the PD need's to discuss this thread, as the game of Cantr is an anon game, this thread should not be allowed. The occasional gab about ones chars could be good, but when it comes out to blatently run a list of all players and their chars, I do not think it wise because of the CR. As well as the many problems in the past with people forming OOC groups and in turn Making full on power hungry char groups that can not be stoped.

Angel,

But that's already possible. I just contact any number of Cantr players on my contact list and go, "Hey! Let's get our characters together and break the Capital Rule on purpose for our own benifit!"

Well, there's a Capital Rule thread for that. If someone even suspects foul play, they post it and the PD looks into it.

Plus, people post their characters names everywhere else all over the Forums. Annoyingly Well Played Characters, Cutest Couples in Cantr, etc. There are lists of names, and boundless topics where people talk about characters of each other and their own.

And, when was Cantr an Anonymous game? It's a Society Simulator. I don't see warning pages everywhere... "CAUTION! Cantr II is an ANONYMOUS game! Do not contact anyone Out Of Character under ANY circumstance because then they'll know who you are! And that breaks the Anonymility of the game!" :P - I'm just playing around :)

I disagree. This is not a breach of the Capital Rule as implied on the Cantr Introduction.

I don't like lately how everything about Cantr cannot be discussed out of game. Why don't we just close the forum? I personally like to talk about events and characters in game. First it is the 4 day rule and now this crap that we can't tell people who our characters are. I don't like it. Soon enough we won't be able to talk about anything in game which in my opinion sort of defeats the purpose of this forum except having people suggest things or talk about stuff not Cantr related.

I personally believe rather than punishing everyone for a crime, one should punish the those that broke the rule that created the crime.

People are going to find ways to break the rules. It has always happened and always will but if the Players Department continues to enforce these heavy handed rules more and more often then you are not solving the problem of getting rid of the rule breakers but rather than making everyone else feel alienated and punished for something they didn't do.

And so I disagree with the 4 day rule and strongly disagree with not being allowed to tell other people who my characters are. If you don't want to tell people who your characters are that is fine and should be respected. But personally I couldn't care either way who knows who my characters are.

if someone wants to know who plays a specific character, and it turns out to be me, i'll pm them. i don't really like to make my characters public, if it can be helped, although everyone knows about norbert... and a few others i've let slip too.

RK, the PD hasn't said it's not allowed, and therefore can't be being heavy-handed on this topic

Those who don't want to post their chars won't, and those who want to will.

It might have been appropriate to include a spoiler warning in the topic though, so that people who don't want to know who plays which chars could avoid seeing it. The title gave me a rather inaccurate impression of what would be contained in here.
