Close Encounters of a Self Kind

Postby diurnal_lee » Tue Mar 16, 2010 2:29 pm

How do you handle it when your characters run into each other? This hasn't been an issue with my anglophone characters because they're so spread out, but in the two other languages I play in, it comes up way more than I expected. I was pretty worried the first time a couple of them crossed paths, and tried to let the other characters present handle most of the interaction, but due to a mismatch of international posting times, wound up having the larger part of the conversation with myself.

That was weird. When I want to write stories by myself, I write stories, you know?

When I have chars that are in the same town, they either hate each other or never talk. Makes things easy. Just have to make sure you are talking with the right char. I have messed that up a few times over the many years I have been playing.

One of mine will sleep usually. Or just interact with their normal group and pretty much ignore the other, other than a name exchange maybe. And even then, the name exchange won't always be direct.

Luckily, I don't think mine are very close nowadays.

I've only encountered one of my own on this account. Mostly they ignored each other, except in instances where it would have been completely OOC to not react.

On my last account, the only two to interact didn't like each other.

I played with a guy a long time ago, where when a particular one of his characters met another of his, she insisted that they smelled. It was an interesting way to handle it.

I've had more trouble with having characters in town with my brothers characters. I think we have 4 characters that have wound up in the same town in the last 2 weeks. Including a newspawn appearance. Since we're living in the same apartment and use the same computer, I treat his characters like they are my own, and thankfully most of the time one is indoors when the other come through or spawns.

When they do interact, I just follow the capital rule and play like they are any other character. It takes some extra work because I have to make sure I don't use any insider knowledge, I have yet to have any conversation get beyond the trivial anyways. With either his characters or my own self interaction.

Just play them out and try not to cheat at the same time.

This is the general idea, right here. We'll all come up with methods we find easiest to us, and tend to use them as a sort of fall-back maneuver whenever the case arises.
