Yeah, well, thanks, but I can read a dictionary myself. I would have been interested in what exactly most non-natives don't seem to grasp.

It can mean "I think I'm better than you", or "Aren't you silly?", or "Really? You think I'd trade for that little?", "I'm so beautiful I can't even see you ugly townfolks", or "Point out your town leader and I promise I won't kill you".

etc.

I can use smirk for a bit of a wry smile when you're teasing people, even when it was in a friendly manner.

I generally use a smirk if my char is being a smartass, teasing or smug. When some chars use it I interpret the smirk as being a little arrogant, though. I would definitely put it up there with smiles, nods, raising an eyebrow, etc. Maybe that could be used in the webzine: Top 10 Overused Emotes. *smirks*

That's me right there.

Another one is the "grin". Cause if you simply say "grins" I read something playful or fun while others read it as some type of evilish smile (though I don't understand the latter to be honest).

People shouldn't use *grins* for *grimaces* since *grimaces* can't be misinterpreted, while *grins* is generally taken as a wide smile. If you use *grins* in it's negative meaning, it should be followed by an adjective. I remember when someone grinned in a bad way, and someone else asked what are you so happy about, and the other one was like "happy? I'm in pain, jerk, don't you see?!" or something like that.

Grin is not equal to grimace. I would not use a grin to illustrate a grimace. :? I might use a pained grin to get closer to a grimace, but that's about it.

I do think it is good to use adjectives with words like "smile" or "grin" in general. Gives it a little more color.

Can't a smirk also be used to represent a shared knowledge between a character and the character that they are speaking to or looking as well as referring to? " I know why she really likes those weapons" *smirks*// "So where where you and Sally last night?// "Oh, I don't think that dastardly Dan will be bothering us anymore, isn't that right Mike?" "Have you ever eaten any of that grilled asparagus and then had to go behind a tree?" *knowing smirk*/// etc.

I guess a *grin* or *knowing grin* could also be used in these situations. It does seem hard to express mannerisms that I haven't already seen plenty of in my short week here. *shrug* *laughs hilariously* *frowns* *covers ears* etc. I may not be the best at it, but I would think that if you throw yourself into character and stay consistent, you can be unique just by trying to express exactly what you feel when you read the text. I know I have already been angry, amused, entertained, sleepy, bored, confused, frightened, frustrated, smart-alecky, suggestive, lecherous, and a few other that I can not currently recall in the span of only one week with only 2 characters. Each time, I have tried to figure out what my 'audience' will grasp from the standpoint of my attempts to communicate and further the interaction. So far its easy as everyone here is so darn intelligent that they pick up on pretty much any of my simple emotes. I have even tried to express what I am thinking privately if it promotes humor and does not affect the way another character RP's; I try not to provide info that shouldn't be conveyed. i.e. ***wishes he had not eaten that asparagus***

Thanks everyone, I am learning alot here

That's my main rule when emoting. Only what can be seen by others. If it can be seen, and it falls within the game mechanics, the emote is ok. Some people emote stuff that takes place over at least several minutes of "time", and I don't like that. I should be able to interfere or say something in between, *falls into the lake, flails around, climbs up to shore, removes clothes and dry them on the small firepit, and get dressed again*

Echoman, if you knew some basics about RPing you'd know that you are ALLOWED to interact between other people's actions even after they have happened.

RPing is a game of catch up, not "keep up".

*falls into the lake, flails around, climbs up to shore, removes clothes and dry them on the small firepit, and get dressed again*

You say, "*laughs at Person One as they fall and flail around* Got your sea legs, yet? *Eyes widen when the clothes are removed.* Whoa, there are children present! *Covers own eyes then opens them after a moment.* You're dressed now, right? *Opens eyes further then nods.* Oh good. Next time, warn me.

And, Alladinsane, this is why people DON'T add to much to their emotes as players rip it all to nothing. Cantr characters have eyes in the back of their heads, can see every nuance to every single emote AND understand other languages without understanding them. Ever pick up a foreign guy's name JUST because it was Capitalized?

That's the "If you know what I mean" smirk. Which is smatassy.

As usual, some interesting things you state as facts.

I started playing RP games some 30 years ago, so I think I know some of the basics. And I still find that behaviour bad. Especially since the character would have to take off and on the clothes while emoting, which clearly didn't happen.

And where did you find the RP-rules? I have been looking...
