new building: tent

Postby Judock Harald » Tue Oct 20, 2009 2:33 pm

I suggest to make it possible to build tents. The unique fact of a tent, is the possiblility to pack it, and build it up somewhere else.

WHY is this a good idea?
1. The materials are already in the game
2. there are area's with less buildingmaterials. So its good to go there and take your tent.
3. in Cantr are much travelers. must they stay roofless?

- A tent is made with string, rope or other bondagematerial. to cover it, you need hide, leather or other cloth. At last for the skeleton, you need bone, wood or thin metal.
- A tent is only interesting if you can also make a lock on it. But of course, it is easy to break the lock.
- to pack a tent, it must be emty and unlocked. It cost you around a day, depending on the type of tent. unpacking and building it up cost also a day.
- a packed tent results in a couple of items, depending on the type. A small tent result in one item (packed shelter). A large nomadic tent result in (packed tentA 1/2 -sticks) and (packed tentA 2/2 -cloth)
- these objects can of course be given away.
- a tent decays over time
- when a tent first is created, you can choose to create the packed tent, or the unpacked.

Diferent types of tents:
- Tipi (small/large)
- Yurt (small/large, expensive, but very beautiful)
- shelter of hide and bones or wooden sticks.
- shelter of wooden sticks and leaves (can only build once, and can be demolished)
- Pavilion (usefull in armys, large, but can split up in around 10 packages)
- modern dome tent (alu), build up fast, but expensive and small
- modern tunnel tent (alu), build up fast, but expensive and small
- circustent (REALLY large)
- bivouac sack(good in mountain-area)
- wigwam
- iglo (made of (of course) ice. not really a tent, but a new type of building)
- sibley-tent
- lavvu (can be made almost out all materials in the area)

This has been suggested before and poses some problems. Not the least is that you wouldn't be able to have stationary machinery in it (since you wouldn't be able to take it with you) and without that a building has very little purpose in this game.
As a means of having some privacy while travelling I see it's merit, but it will definitely require some programming and I'm not sure how big a task it is.
Pretty in pink.

At the core, once we can destroy buildings, it would just be a matter of being able to build and destroy the tent.

So, project build tent:

3 poles
1 tent
Xg small rope
4 hours
hammer

Project pack tent:

a destruction project with ouptut = the build input.

Obviously, the tent needs to be empty, which might require that any buildings be empty when actively destroyed unless we make a special exception for the tent.

Locks are impossible, since that would mean that the tent would never be empty. Besides, a tent isn't in any way a secure structure, so it's irrelevant.

That really should be all that's fundamentally needed, I would think.

ok, ok, i agree
but what to think about the option to pack also the machinery which is inside? put it in a large chest, so it made it possible to carry (out).

and i dont see the problem of the lock. yeah a lock is an object, but it seems easy to me to make an exeption for locks. and beside that, why not use a padlock?

No locks on tents. It's an unnecessary complication, and it makes no sense adding a lock onto something that can be cut through in seconds. Also, indoor machines are not portable for a reason.

If we make a tent, it's for privacy only, or primitive storage. No locks, no machines.

Although tents are rather useless (think about it - logistically it's completely useless and strategically you're limited to barricading), I think that working for the implementation of them is interesting because it poses certain problems that we need to overcome eventually to enhance game development.

Still, too much talk on Suggestions and no words in Accepted means that the topic poses biggie problems.

@Dudel: Since that the breakdown of the search engine pretty much made such researches much more effort demanding, I assume that you are researching these links just to annoy the suggesters.

Well, not like there was anything wrong with that.

I like the idea of a movable tent (unlockable), it would be useful on some of the unpopulated islands with nasty animals - so it would just be used as a shelter, nothing more.

However, I'm not sure if the cantr code could deal with deconstruction of buildings?!

Unless you change the whole building code to begin with to match the new deconstruction... :?

I think they're trying to avoid that...

Deconstruction/Destruction is planned, at least I'm fairly certain that it is. However, we need to program building deterioration first, which does pose a list of hurdles.
