Differences in Radios

Postby Rob Maule » Thu Oct 08, 2009 7:36 pm

I was just wondering some things about radios. Why are there different radios? Why can you build a vehicle radio receiver in a vehicle and a ship, but the transmitters are separate? And why does it have to be in a cabin on a ship, but not in a car? How come repeaters can only be in buildings? Is it true that vehicle receivers can only pick up signals from a medium radio transmitter (according to the wiki)? Were they implemented to fit an idea of how radios should work, or to hinder how radios should not work? Why not just let all radios be made anyplace but outside? I thought I remembered them not being allowed outside so that it might force characters to go indoors?

Radios in Cantr are primitve. They use vacuum tubes, or nothing. RL radios of this lack of sophistication were big things and were never used outside. Hence the need for a ship cabin - even so Cantrian ships haven't really got the technology to drive radios.
There are also, I think, philosophical constraints - it was envisaged that radio operator could be a full time job, and others which I don't know/ have forgotten.

It might be that the location of ship and vehicle radios must be updated with each traveling/sailing tick and thus they needed separate objects. A lot of things in Cantr cannot be built outside, maybe under the assumption that moisture and weather effects would destroy them.
