Nope. There is fuel in the game, but at the moment you don't need it to drive.

I feel the need to add some suggestions 2, after reading this thread.

+1 for trains!

Trains only stop at stations, so you don't have to "wake up" at every town while traveling. Maybe select a station you want to stop. Towns have to build stations then, or just see "A train rushing by".

For the train itself, maybe build locomotives and rain carriages as separate vehicles and (if possible) connect them. Trains will get slower, the more carriages connected.

For the robbing train idea, in a town you can block the rail (like locking) so the people in the train have to get out of the train with a crowbar to (unlock) clean up the blockage.

Thats it for my imagination for now, I think it can really help in moving big amounts of stuff and people from one end of the island to the other as the quickest way.

This is the best reason I think we should have trains:

People could add cargo cars or whatever their called to a train and put locks on em. They could tell the person driving the engine "here is 1000 iron, can you take this to bla bla bla" and the person could drop off various cargo cars to various towns.

In addition, if people can enter various cargo/passenger cars that are unlocked, but can't enter the engine, it allows for faster transportation in Cantr without the added inconvenience of people hijacking a vehicle.

Although I think it would be cool if you could break the lock on a train to enter the engine, some train heists would be bad ass.
