I think there are a lot more lone characters, working or sitting just behind locked doors and only possible get out every something years to get something to eat. Or characters being loooong time on sea (can you be permanently on sea with fishing? i guess no, since the cooking wood would go out after sometime.)
As for older players pretending to be new to the game, if you're going to do it, do it well. My biggest newbie problem was not knowing how to do someone else's project. No one went out of the way to explain it to me ooc though I'm pretty sure it was blindingly obvious and I had to work out out on my own but the characters invovled that could have helped me ooc remained in character and interacting with me as if my character was just stupid/self righteously interpendant whatever. I, personally, found that better. It was fursatrating but i got that 'YAY!' feeling when I worked it out on my own, i felt it was truer to the character that she didn't just instantly changed how she did things and I see the characters as the characters and not the paternal 'now this is how things are done' guide figures of an older player.
With my first character I just ran around locations nowing hardly what to do (and knowing nothing about projects), first location I spawned I considered them a bit snippy, figured out how to farm (and out of sheer luck got nourishing than healing food). Then finally figured out something about projects and the such. This is still my favorite, most interesting char. Most other chars just farm to survive, in the moment I got not enough realtime time to think into them.
BTW: None of my characters ever worked for another. At least never for payment other than possibly a local tax on production of some material. I don't know why, maybe I just didn't get a good offer (but I could've looked more), or I its just my OOC personality who doesn't like it. Of course I guess all characters could have far better equipment by now if they did.
