Whispering to one's self - change/addition

Postby Doug R. » Thu Sep 10, 2009 4:05 pm

It occurred to me that it with the implementation of overheard whispers, there might be RP cases where it would be desirable for a character to role-play some action surreptitiously in public, allowing a chance for someone to "see" it. This can be done now via whispering to ones self, but whispering is one specific action - whispering. I'd like it to be changed to a more general description, or a special new "private emote" button be added specifically for this kind of emoting. I really think using the new overheard whisper mechanism in this way could really enrich RP , but it would need to be refined in the events message to avoid the appearance of people suddenly talking to themselves.

Here's an example:

Player does a whisper to himself:

*slips out of the house quietly and quickly, hoping that no one outside notices that he's naked*

Town sees:

You see Player whisper to Player
(or someone "overhears" and sees)

What would be better:
You see Player.....XXinsert some generic action words hereXX (maybe custom?)

isn't this true for any public emoting as well that in cantr world is acutally "said"?

Sounds like a good idea. That way people could actually try to do subtle things subtly but with a chance of someone noticing/overhearing.

There have definitely been times when I would have done this...I can think of one recently actually. It would be nice if ALL actions have the possibility of doing this actually.

The $500 question, is how do we do it without turning it into this overly-complicated monstrosity of a suggestion?

Changing "self emoting" to something else than "self whispering" make only sense if the whole game changes "emoting" to be something different than "talking".

What if you have the ability to "whisper" and it hides the text from everyone, unless they overhear? So then that would solve also the problem of too many whispers filling a screen.

Yes, I did... but the "D:" was more about Doug expressing thoughts in an emote.

It was an emote to himself, he's allowed. The person he was emoting to knew what he was thinking!

That's an ugly excuse... and I've characters who whisper to themselves already.

Makes other characters look at yours like "Oi, whats you be talking!?"

Sometimes intentions can be implied .

If someone comes running out of their house naked, it can be implied that they don't want to be seen, or else they wouldn't be moving quickly.

Someone stating that they sit along the beach, sadly remembering their lost love, is not correct, because there is no implications as to what could be going on in their head.

Don't tisk-tisk me for not following your narrow role-play rules, and keep this on-topic please.
