Fueling Harvesters
I know that harvesters and drills already use petrol, and that's nice and all, but why can't they run on biodiesel or propane too?
The problem is that oil is too rare, and an automated harvester or drilling project is convenient but not necessary, so no one's going to go through ridiculous lengths to get oil to make petrol to power one. (and they shouldn't have to)
It would be nice to see other machines be able to make use of fuels too...I see lots of places set up to make it, but other than ovens there's not much to actually use it on since it doesn't seem like the whole fueling vehicles suggestion will go through anytime soon.

Erm, we do have biodiesel already as far as I know. It might be a bit late to say no.
Principally it should be no problem to add those projects to the machines, but I wonder if anyone would use the new options. Harvesters already give you more food than you need (I often use them for a full day, take some of it and let the rest rot or be taken by others). Investing fuel to get even more seems rather pointless. It's just not worth the effort, even if you would get the fuel for free.

Pretty in pink.

Removing fuel-free projects from the harvesters is something I'm interested in.

I'd be cool with this too, if there were other options besides petrol. I just don't like the way it is now where one person builds a machine and the entire town is set for life.
Also making some kind of fuel-run water pump would be cool...I'll try and think of other possible machines later.

But propane and biodiesel? It would be handy now but it's going to be a necessity if fuel is the only way to run a harvester. Seriously, it's one thing to make a trip all the way across a continent to one of the three whole places that have oil for a one time thing like a road, but to have to do it multiple times for something as relatively unimportant as a harvester is too much...I think this is another one of those things where a few people are 'oh this will be wonderful it will force towns to organize and set up regular trade routes and blah blah blah' when in reality no one who isn't already nearby will bother and we'll have a bunch of rusting harvesters and drills sitting around useless.

I disagree with every aspect of your post. I would like any of towns my chars are living in to be forced to organise trips to anywhere more than once.

Same here. Maybe we should open up a new post for removing non-fueled projects?

Yeah good luck with that.
I never said towns organizing trips would be a bad thing, I just said it wouldn't happen. The only real result would be people making more picks and shovels.
No one's arguing against fuel-only harvester projects, I just don't understand why you think it has to be oil or nothing. Propane and bio diesel take organization and effort to produce and distribute in large quantities too.
