making meat easier to "use"...

Postby Pirog » Sat May 01, 2004 2:37 am

As it is now most people discard the meat when they have killed animals...and in many regions where regular food sources doesn't exist you seldom have both wood for making fires AND stone for a fire pit.

And since you need a shovel to make a simple firepit primitive societies can't use the meat at all.

My suggesion is:

A) Either remove the shovel as a necessary tool for the firepit, or let it be possible to make shovels out of wood...seeing that shovels used to be out of wood this wouldn't come off as weird.

B) Make it possible to prepare the meat without a fire.
What about dried meat? Salted meat? I don't know...
It would also be cool to be able to use turtle shells as pots to cook the food in :)

If no one in the forest has a shovel or a trowel, they are probably too primitive to survive in the forest.

Elsewere in forest regions, others regulrly leave the forest to trade wood or other resources for food or stone and trade the food in the forest, or just gather it elsewhere.

I don't know why you're so set against the need for a tiny amount of iron to build "meant processors". There's got to be a downside to living in the forest. And like I said, it encourages trade. Don't we all like that, trade?

Hunter> It's not just for forests...it goes for deserts, mountains etc.

I'm set against iron being necessary becayse it takes a natural part (hunting) out of the game for primitive societies.

And although I like to promote trade between regions I don't think Cantr should be a game where everyone needs to me merchants.
The basic stuff, like hunting, should be available for isolated, primitive societies to. Most who have enough iron to waste on a shovel would just sell a small part of iron in exchange for potatoes or something instead of wasting time grilling/cooking meat...

Well, if not trade, how about a food runner? The objective is to coorperate right? If you ppl can't get organissed to have a constant flow of food into the region...

By the way, deserts. you can build all the firepits you want there, but where do you get the wood from? Probably a greater asset than iron in the desert.

Again, I've had/have several char's in forest regions, and although they have either ovens or a firepit, the people there mainly live on imported foods. The meat proccessing machineries are rarely used.

Well...that is my whole point.

This isn't a suggestion mainly on how to solve food problems in deserts, forests etc, it's about making meat a more attractive form of food.

By the way, deserts. you can build all the firepits you want there, but where do you get the wood from? Probably a greater asset than iron in the desert.

Yeah, that's why I wanted a way to cook meat without wood...

Now you want to cook without wood? And probably without coal aswell, right? So you want to make an oven run on whatever the cars run? Nothing?

Actually I don't care if meat is attractive as a food source. We get 4 resources form animals, big and small bones, hide, meat. A part of the meat is being proicessed, but there's so much meat from hunting, cooking it all would be nearly impossible.

One of my chars's is a cartographer. He uses cooked meat as a foodsource since it's so light. Another one lives in the forest and cooks meat if there's a shortage of food.

Hunter> Well, to be fair...we are cooking without water as it is now, so it wouldn't be more unrealistic than it currently is :)

But I meant cook as prepare...like I said earlier in the topic there could be dried food or something similar.

WEl, lets make steel easier to get to and to be dug out of the ground with our bare hands again. And I think 1KG of wood suffices for a skimmer. Everyone should be able to harvest like 50 KG's of as[paragus in a day, sut to make things a bit easier again.

By the way, "Cooked" meat is just a general name for prepared meat. I can grill meat without water in my back yard, that Cantr way. By the way, it say's "grilling meat" when preparing, no water needed for that. :p

A new machine is going to be put within the game shortly, once approved. It will allow you to cook meat without a shovel. Wood and Stone is needed, though (I think).

Hunter>

I don't see the stuff you compare it with as equal.
For my part it's more of a RP thing than becoming more "efficient".

I think it is. Get more for less, that's what it comes down to.

Anyway. U got what you want. Why Keep arguing? :P

But I'm still against it. To be able to live in uninhabitable places without food readyly available you should be well equipped/organised.The forest communities my chars live in have no problems obtaining food. 8)

I think the addition of a way to cook meat with out a shovel is a good idea. When new areas are formed you don't have anyone near by to who is set up for trade, This would allow those in the forests to still be able to eat. Of course with this new way of cooking meat, I think, you won't get as much out of it, I mean you'll need to eat more of it per day. So you still would want the materials to build an oven....in other words..."Trade"

As for adding ways to prepare meat like dried meat is also good, but I think the only time salt was added to meat was to keep the meat from spoiling. I know that the old cattle drives going in to San Frascico for sale that's what they did. They would put salt on the meat because they couldn't freeze it back then. Salt kept it from rotting, so that it could still be sold. I my self have eaten salted beef and it is still cooked, it was just salted before it was cooked.

The new machine required more wood/stone than the fire pit does, in order to compensate for not having a shovel to make it. Once approved, and I put in the meat cooking algorithms, you'll make LESS meat with it, than a pit or oven. So it's a low end machine, so a superiour machine would be advised (Being an Oven or Fire Pit)

Good.

I think even a fire pit isnt woth the resources its made of, unless one is quite hungry.

Where an oven would feed a whole community, the new machine would one feed one person.
