A convenient new location: bottom of the sea.
Add a new dragging-destination to be available on all ship decks: "Drag overboard". Unwanted items can then be dragged "overboard" and are lost to the player and don't weigh down the ship any more.
Technically they would not be deleted, but all moved as normal to a single "special" location where all items dragged overboard end up, and where they will be stuck in limbo forever after that.
How to prevent accidental dragging to this special location? (you meant it to go to the cabin but accidentally it went overboard, not nice) Idea was that instead of confirmation screens you'd always be required to drag the object twice. First you get the message:
"You consider throwing (item) overboard. Drag the item again to permanently throw it away."
And if it detects you dragging the same exact object to the "limbo" again immediately after the message was issued, the operation is carried out.
I propose that people dragged overboard in this manner from a ship should die and their items be lost (in the special limbo place together with the body). However, if that's too radical for some, then let's hear if ProgD is able to limit it to items/resources/notes only.

HOLY JEBUS! That was only half okay!
And... Suggestions involve more then ProgD... why always with "Lets talk to ProgD"? Shouldn't they be only "brought in" once the discussion was fully... discussed? O.o
Anyway... I'm "okay" with all but the dragging people to death thing. Auto death again, man? Whats your deal with that!?

2 changes I would propose:
1. some ability to "dive" - thus finding "sunken treasure"
2. the ability to "swim" and thus if not so far from land that you die first, the possibility of saving yourself if dragged overboard.
You know that even a canoe is faster than a swimming person.. And it takes a canoe days to dock somewhere. Dragging someone overboard wouldn't even be hard, as most of the time they are dragged on board already.
Perhaps make it three or four times as hard (you have to throw them over the railing, don't you?) and then make them wash ashore at the closest coastal location.
You see a ... in their ...ies wash ashore.

1) Many arguments against this can be read in the threads discussing note destruction.
2) As I understand, the way Cantr is coded makes this impossible, and not easily alterable. If it were, buildings would be storing vehicles, and small vehicles could be carried (something that's been desired at the highest levels for well over 4 years). Something can only be one category, sadly, so turning the sea into a location would render it impossible to sail on.

Perhaps it could be another location, accessible from ships only..?
It would not be the sea as it is, technically a totally different thing.

Any mechanism that can destroy notes will be rejected on the same grounds that note destruction was rejected on.
And obviously, instant death via drag and drown is completely against the spirit of Cantr. There are already mechanisms in place to eliminate players, resources, and items, and notes are indestructible intentionally. There isn't a need for a new mechanism.

I agree to that point. But perhaps you could just have the option. "Throw item overboard", for items, and items only. Then they would wash ashore at the closest coastal location.
What about that..?

Sort of like when someone dies on the road all of there items end up at the closest town?
I am completely 100% AGAINST being able to drag people overboard. People are already complaining about the current combat system and how it is to instantanious. If we added instant death from being dragged overboard that would definetly not agree with everyone. As doug has pointed out as well, people cannot swim in the ocean with the way the game mechanics are.
So, throwing people and notes are out of the question.
However, I am not opposed to items if that was implemented...

Which is exactly what I was thinking about.
But I still think it could also be done with notes. The notes would wash ashore as well (undamaged, as they just are in the realm of Cantr.)
Perhaps it'd be a bit like bottle post. I am against just destroying those items by throwing them overboard, or making them end up in some sort of extra unreachable location, inaccessible to anyone, making it some sort of mythic treasure chamber.

We could have a great mail system this way. Just have the ship sail around the island and throw out the mail at each town he passes...

Besides that point, it actually seems like a cool idea.

Just make it go to the nearest town and done. I'd like that.
