A Tribute to Rigel Kent

Postby Cogliostro » Thu Aug 13, 2009 11:07 pm

"Rigel Kent" was the nick of an infamous Cantr player with poor spelling and a big attitude. Everybody hates Rigel here in the forum and uses him whenever a bad example is needed.

Well, I've met a few of Rigel's characters in the game. Let me tell you, correct spelling or not, they were all heros in their own right. Fresh, active personalities, that really affected the Cantr world with their foolhardy roguish knavery. He had no idea or didn't care that he was from the start doomed. You can't fight the system in Cantr, since literally everything is out of balance and never in the rogue's favour. But he had a knack for it, and I know dozens of people along with myself who probably cringed and faceplanted each time they heard in the game that Rigel's character YET AGAIN weaseled out of prison somehow, avoiding certain death, and is again at large. It should have been impossible. Yet, somehow, whether by lying, or betraying, or seducing people, he did it. He managed to set himself free and played the game to the fullest potential of it, without becoming a dull resource-gathering or plantation-overseeing drone somewhere.

It's just my opinion, but I'd take 1 Rigel Kent and his insane ingame adventures any day over 10 of you run-of-the-mill oldbie character types with your immaculate spelling, which you use to effect the grand "roleplay" of repeatedly asking your wife: "How are you today, my love? *smiles*" day after day for months and years, while you set up smelter projects for your indentured newspawns. :D :D

Well done, Rigel, you were one fresh bastard! I'm very sad that you seem to have unsubscribed from Cantr.

The same town executed two of his characters within a Cantr year. I got to do the honors on one of them. It was very satisfying.

You can have a fresh active personality while not being "all that nice" and still not having half, if not more, of the community mad at you... trust me.

Not to mention that he doesn't/didn't EVER speak the truth about his characters OOC so I HIGHLY doubt he got any type of things he stated. A majority of time it was OOC pity on the guy for one dumb reason or another... I'm glad that one town handled his characters the way they did.

And I'm VERY MAD that the one time I had a character with the ability to do something about it... couldn't do due his "employers" wishes... and then he left town, my character.

OH I WANTED THAT SATISFACTION SO MUCH... each time it was on someone who either couldn't, as in game mechanics wouldn't let him, or wouldn't... as in it would break character to do so.... OH AND HE COULDA BROKE THAT GUY IN HALF... if he wasn't strictly nonviolent.

..and wait, he unsubscribed?

Rigel wasn't a "rouge" he was an idiot.... and the behavior you complain about "the oldbies" is because you don't interject. Get what you give, mate... get what you give... trust me.

Just curious, did his continuous CRBs have anything to do with him unsubscribing?

He was the worst player I have ever witnessed in my short roleplaying career - witnessing him across two games. Anyone that breaks character in character because they "can't be bothered" (his words) can GTFO in my not so humble opinion. He regularly died then spawned another character in the same location, and remembered everything from his other characters history. He is a blight upon every game that he joins.

Bullsh*t. I had a character that by 24 had taken an entire town, only needing to kill one newspawn to do so. She died when I unsubscribed in the middle of the Cantr ocean, years travel from any coastline, in a raker absolutely packed with riches. Her last theft involved clearing out an entire boat while the whole crew was on board, oblivious.

I also had another character take an entire town with NO violence whatsoever, even threatened.

Neither cases were small or poor towns.

So bullsh*t you can't fight the system, the system is easy to fight provided you have even a shard of ingenuity.

Three of Seven characters...

One was outright GIVEN leadership just for being a stone heard DOUCHE BAG.

One is the unofficial leader... all asking for advice and turning to him... he is, essentially, the leader of the town... and could be literally if he asked for it. That's all he'd have to do, ask.

Another is "second banana" but only due to technicality of "being with" the leader of said town.

So yeah, what Chase said... BULLSHIT! <Except I'm not afraid to say/type SHIT>

Agreed! And I was able to get a piece of one as well. Satisfying indeed. :D
Awkward: Having your phone go off full volume during a funeral.

Even more awkward: Your ringtone being "I Will Survive"

The most awkward: Coming back after a 10+ year hiatus and swearing I'd never come back.

Hi, chase. No fair shooting from the hip with "oh no, I had a character that..."

So what that you had the character and took the town? I took many towns too. That doesn't change anything about the problems Cantr has with even the best equipment being so nerfed it's useless to have; useless in the sense of you not being able to do anything really exciting or meaningful now that you have it. That especially applies to weapons of course, but not only weapons. Everything is rolled back and made neutral-pointless, with reduced damage, reduced yield, reduced everything.

A lot of people put up the argument that they're surviving fine under the current rules, but the criticisms I'm trying very hard to formulate (maybe it's not working so good) have nothing to do with that. It's about how as a newbie you can't have even a hope of doing something dramatic and different in the current game, even when you do strike it rich or get there by long hard work. That's one of the reasons newbies die like flies - not from crossbows, but from heart attacks. They're heartbroken over how much the programmers shafted them in favour of conservatives playing the "town leader" type everywhere.

You stated the system is never in the rogue's favour. I provided proof that it is not.

There are many successful bottom-feeding rogues out there who live off the abandoned and decaying infrastructure in Cantr. It does not take 2-3 earth years go get a hold of a sports car in Cantr if you are creative.

I am not disputing this in any way. It is inevitable when the game designer has effectively left the fold and left the sheep to herd themselves.

I'm not convinced. Yes, most newspawns will buckle under and work to get what they want for a few years and then take off and do what they like. However, nothing is requiring you to play this way. Gathering is free (in most places) so you have a source of income without talking to another character. Many have started off as wandering traders or theives, stealing what and when they can.

The closed map doesn't help this every town must have a town leader or Government mentality, but I can't help but think that the community (and not the mechanics) is really to blame for setting the type of (town leaders + workers) culture you complain about.

What's this sheep comment and why do I feel like I was grouped into it?

I don't bother with suggestions or changes etc with Cantr... its done. People like it how it is and its basically beyond Alpha with little to ZERO changes to it.

Especially when a majority of the suggestions are "Lets make killing easier!" and they are from said "new people"... which implies something not to smart on their person.

make more god damn characters, something dramatic will happen

i spawned a character a few years ago, and he spawned on a battlefield. joined a side, got a weapon and shield, and ended up killing the leader of the invading side in a lucky strike, forcing them to retreat for a few days giving much needed respite.

Now you tell me that isnt affecting the world as a newspawn.

Long story short - get your head out of your ass and make something of yourself, and maybe you wont be so bored.

I agree, don't complain about not having power or whatever... I have some chars who very young where leaders of towns already..... Just a few years after spawning because I made something from my chars..... It's not that difficult to start some sort of company and last time I checked many mountain towns where empty..... If you are a good leader you can easily make something from such a town.

If you put in long, hard work, you're not a newbie anymore, are you?

The game description says you "can" play those things. It doesn't say you can do it immediately, or even in the place you spawn. It says you "can." If people think they can just spawn and be the world's greatest general before they even know how to enter a building, then that's highly unrealistic. Most players quit games they join. They come looking for something specific, and if they don't find it within 15 minutes, they quit. That's the way it is, for every game out there.

I have to admit, as much as I hated the bastard (Rigel), his characters were actually really fun to play with, as much as his spelling pissed me off. He did do (or maybe still does) crazy, rogueish things that were awesome. But the trolling on the forums still pissed me off.

Of course, he never really RPed, but it was still awesome wondering what idiot thing he'd do next.
