I'd love to see it implemented. I have quite detailed images of (almost) all my charries in my head, although I rarely RP them, as it would mean geting it done over and over again every time my charrie meets someone new.
I wouldn't like it to be too much detailed, though. Just the most basic things:
- body type
- skin colour
- hair colour
- eye colour
- and maybe face shape
but that's all.
Facial hair or hair style are easy to change, and easy to RP - or at least easier than going with all the most basic things again and again.

Hair Color: Light [x] Dark []
Height: Short [] "Average" [x] Tall []
Body Type: Thin [] "Average" Plump [x]

He is in his twenties. He is wearing nothing worth mentioning. He seems to be bigger then average be of average height and have light colored hair.

I think THAT would work to be a middle ground, yes? That is a basic description of the character AND allows for others to RP the rest. :D It might need "rewording" but that basically would work.

You are an idiot if you took that out of context and implied something that was not intended, sorry Wiro.

My point is/was still made.

Like the general idea. By using features it avoids freeform descriptions being abused.

Also, having it based on spawn place, and random makes sure it remains realistic as opposed to unsual. (Coming from a place with 20 short people and being unusually tall etc)

Like everything in cantr, you dont start with a preconceived notion of their character or any background, you "ad lib" your way through it.

For existing characters, its more tricky, perhaps you could let them choose. But that makes the whole thing harder to code. With the above you chould base things on the skills system, just have two dimensions of each quality tall/short, or a range for colours. So perhaps just make it random based on spawntown also.

Id also like to have an option for scars, tatoos etc. But that could be too hard to add? "with a scar on his arm"

Maybe after taking a total of 300 damage they'd get "has many scars" that'd be cool.

I don't like that one. People are then like "omg you have scars everywhere" all the time without even giving you the chance to RP that you have clothes covering your every bodypart or heck, perhaps you don't RP anything at all and are you wearing pants instead of a skirt to cover up the scars. *shrugs* dunno

I think it's odd that a game that relies heavily of freeform roleplay shouldn't have a freeform character description. All this "has scars" talk wouldn't be necessary if you could just write "He has a scar on his left cheek". I think the abuse argument is not really valid. After all, the whole game can be abused.

Maybe we should use a mixed system. A few hardcoded values to define your general (unchangable) features and a freeform field to spice it up with scars, hairdo or special clothes and shield designs. Things you would roleplay anyway, but don't because it's to tedious to repeat it over and over.

I think FTO uses a vaguely similar system, providing you with general racial features and letting you choose the details yourself.

I think existing characters should be able to pick what they look like. New characters should be random. And those credits to buy extra minutes (which is now useless) should be used to purchase the ability to pick your attributes.

Well, getting your appearance totally at random is even more pointless than the genetics approach. I don't think we should limit the players option just to sell minutes.

Genetics approach makes no sense from a system that doesn't have birth.

Well, you already get your skills by genetics. Since they are survival traits it is at least quite interesting to see how they develop in a population over time. With appearances it makes considerably less sense in my opinion. I wouldn't mind if players just chose an apperance for their characters.

Females should have the option of bust size as well imo. Though i really think anything like facial hair and hair style should be part of that sheet. If you RP you have a beard you shouldn't have to say... Hi my name is fred, and i have beard. To each person you meet.

I think that three or four things that you can variate is enough, IMO.
