Salt Extraction Machine

Postby Elros » Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:04 pm

Alright, some of this was disscussed in another topic, but I decided to start a new thread focusing on it. Here is the general idea that has been disscussed so far:

Elros:
It would be nice to have some sort of machine that gathered salt while at sea as well. I can do some real life research myself and see what sort of machine they have used to do this. I am not sure if a salting barrel can be built on a ship or not, I will have to look at that, but if it can than this could be a good way to sustain yourself while at sea for longer periods of time.

What do all of you think?

Piscator:
The easiest way would just be to have a large pan, fill it with saltwater and let it dry. I don't know how feasible that is on a rocking boat, but it should work on land without problem.

It would in any case enable, in combination with fishing nets, a character to survive on sea without ever docking to land. As far as I'm aware that's not possible at the moment and maybe it should be checked first if it would violate an existing policy if it was implemented now.

Another way to produce salt at see would be boil saltwater using a pot and some kind of fuel. This would be more effective, but would require docking to a port from time to time.

All methods to obtain salt from seawater should be available in locations bordering to the sea, too, to keep it consistent.
Every action has a consequence.

If you use heat to purify water you already end up with salt as a sub-product.

The problem is that machines currently can't have two products at the same time. I agree that it would be logical to get salt AND water, but that seems to be not possible at the moment.

But machines can be used for making more than one product.. such as a smelter can make both iron and steel... why wouldn't the solar still be able to produce both. I understand right now you cannot make both at the same time... but you should be able to produce one or the other.

I think a seperate machine is not a good idea.

Is there a reason why we don't have a machine (or is there and I don't recall it) that extracts salt by evaporation?

It was a good enough to extract salt for humans for thousands of years... can't really see the problem in Cantr (aside from the balance element).

In fact, the balance element would seem to be the only argument against it. The rarity of salt is probably a good thing from an economic point of view. Maybe a machine that can only be built outside in a location on the sea?

Wait, what? Salt is rare?

use heat to evaporate the water? Then you have to have some kind of extra thing to catch the water vapor right?

Insofar as it's not in every location.

And toon, if you aimed that comment to me: no, I meant just getting salt.

I'm a little confused right now why you're quoting me here, but I agree completely. Nothing should be easier than evaporating seawater. Some kind of fireplace and a pot should be sufficient. The efficiency would be very low though.
In RL you would need about three parts of coal to produce one part of salt if no thermal energy is lost.

I concur with all of this. Two products would be better, but absent that...

I agree as well. We cannot cause a single project to output salt and water like some had suggested because it is not possible to output two resources from one project. However, I do not see why we can't add another project to the solar still for salt extraction. That way you would have a dropdown list with the option to gather water, or the option to gather salt.

Sound better?

That's nice and simple idea - as simple as salt. And don't be worry about rocking boat - if we can scramble eggs right now with cooking stone on a deck grill, we will manage with salt extraction 8)

I don't think that salting barrel will be sensible to evaporate salt, because it's purpose is different - we use this to salt some things.

And one thought more - personally I don't think that small amount which you get from extracting salt will encourage a lot of people to do that, so it will be used rather when necessary (ex. salting fishes or meat when you are hungry), not for income, because it's quite a lot of places, you can dock to and dig salt (at least in polish area :D)

We weren't suggesting using the salting barrel to extract salt, we were simply saying that if we had a seperate maching to extract salt on a ship, as well as a salting barrell, then you could catch fish, collect salt, and salt the meat in the barrell, all on the seas. :)
