New music instruments

Postby Elm0 » Sun Jul 19, 2009 10:59 am

Few days ago I've come up in polish subforum with a suggestion of implementing some non portable instruments, like:

- piano
- gong
- church bells
- bass drums
- organs

And I think it would be nice to see/hear such kind of music IG. Here's link for the whole discussion, it in polish, but the last one is at least partially understandable and if you like the idea, I can translate it all, of course.

http://forum.cantr.org/viewtopic.php?t=17497

I've thought a bit about how to make such instruments in game mechanics, and basing on my rather lame understanding of programming, there could be two ways:

- making them items too heavy to hold in inventory, but possible to be dragged and played w/o actually holding it
- making them normal, non-movable machines with "music" button.

I really, really like the too heavy to pick up but not too heavy to drag for most people. That would give people a reason for cooperation. Would be really awesome. :) I would like more music instruments.

Marzy mi się:
Dzwon okrętowy (ship's bell)
Czas: 3 dni

Oooh, I think I like this one. Basically a bell on a ship, eh? That would be soooo great!

I think the main reason this might not see implementation is a generally feeling that we have too much cosmetic stuff in the game right now which has not bedded in quite yet.

In theory though, I see no reason this couldn't be accepted.

Where'd you put the church bells?

Those things are huge, and mostly inside a building(/church), while hearable in quite a range from the church.

Yes, there was a proposal to make some types of instruments audible within several locations from the place, where you play on them. There should be bell towers as new building.

But personally, I didn't like the idea of bells too much. Pianos, organs etc. are much easier to make. :)

You know that there were actual bell-maker 'guilds' in medieval times? Just like there were those for carpenters and metalsmiths.

But often those bell-makers had to make cannons instead. Ironic, as those bells were believed to be important to peace.

I am ALL FOR more music and instruments in game!

I only wish they had more "use" then for RP so that others would be more inclined to use them.

*puts a piano in a bar which does 1 damage to people so then can all drink the ale etc*

But seriously... I'm all for this! :)

Good idea. I like it. Pianos and such would be cool. You could have one in a classy bar, or a music room.

Bells could be great for warnings or signals.

It is pretty cosmetic, but I like it.

I was thinking about music instruments and how it would be neat if they were more like resting projects. You click the button to play music, it starts a project that ends when you click the "x". Each hour or tick it would be like sneezing or what not.

At First:
"You hear Fred playing some music on the bagpipes"

Each Time After:
"You hear Fred continuing to play music on the bagpipes"

Then if multiple people are playing at once.
At First:

"You hear Fred playing some music on the bagpipes"
"You hear Sally playing some music on the lute"
"You hear Bob playing some music on the trombone"

Afterward:
"You continue hear a group of people (Fred, Sally, Bob) playing instruments together consisting of bagpipes, a lute, and a trombone."

This would give more of a feeling that a group of people are playing instruments, and that it doesn't seem like they are just blowing a few notes.

If you wanted to go a little bit farther. Everyone should be awful at playing an instrument at first. This would require people to actually practice to increase their skill.

"You hear Fred awkwardly playing the bagpipes"

If Fred is awful, Sally is expert, and Bob is an expert, the skill level of playing together should be averaged.

"You continue hear a group of people (Fred, Sally, Bob) skillfully playing instruments together consisting of bagpipes, a lute, and a trombone."

Exactly what we need, more clutter in the events log. </thisissonotsarcasm>

I'm all for a music skill. I don't like making music a project, however.

I agree Wiro, this is not a good idea. You would have a bunch of sleepers falling asleep playing the instruments and then every hour you would have 10 sneezes, 30 whispers, and 10 people playing random instuments... Not a good idea.

What ever happened to good ole RP? Just RP the dang instruments, I mean that is what the game is about. The objects shouldn't do EVERYTHING for you. This is what I did with one of my charries the other day, not the best RP, but just an example of RPing instruments.

2672-3.24: Sylvie says: "*claps with excitement and starts dancing around to the music, her feet moving in time with the rythm, spinning, jumping, a blissful smile on her face as her hair and dress spin about with her movements*"

2672-2.26: You hear Gaius Julius play some music on a brand new zither.

2672-2.26: Gaius Julius says: "*he nods with approval while staying silent*"

2672-2.25: You play some music on a brand new bone flute.

2672-2.25: You say: "*gets a little confused with the sudden change and blows a few off-key notes before stopping and blushing embarrasdley* Uh.. Uh Rathgard do it right now. *puts the flute back to his lips and starts playing again, this time blending in perfectly with Gaius*"

2672-2.25: Gaius Julius says: "*he suddenly stops playing the melody and starts playing a harmony to the flute*"

2672-2.25: You hear Gaius Julius play some music on a brand new zither.

2672-2.24: You play some music on a brand new bone flute.

2672-2.24: You say: "*smiles bobbing his head up and down to the rythm as he blows on the flute*"

2672-2.23: You hear Gaius Julius play some music on a brand new zither.

2672-2.23: Gaius Julius says: "*he grins* Exactly! *he starts tapping along with Rathgard, while playing a jaunty tune*"

2672-2.22: You play some music on a brand new bone flute.

2672-2.22: You say: "*stops playing for a moment and listens to the tune that Gaius is playing before beggining to tap his foot with the new rythm, brings the flute to his mouth and begins playing along with Gaius*"

2672-2.21: You hear Gaius Julius play some music on a brand new zither.

2672-2.21: Gaius Julius says: "*he supresses his laughter carefully and takes out his zither again*"

2672-2.21: You say: "*starts blowing nervously on the flute again*"

2672-2.21: You play some music on a brand new bone flute.

2672-2.21: You say: "*smiles at Gaius* Thank Gaius! *grins* Rathgard practice lots in Rathgard's most secretest room... *gasps and covers his mouth with his hand* Uh oh... Rathgard now supposed talk about secret room cause secret room a secret..."

2672-2.20: Gaius Julius says: "*he nods to Rathgard with a smile* Beautiful, sir."

2672-2.20: You say: "*taps his foot as his blows*"

2672-2.20: You say: "*sits back in the seat and starts playing his flute*"

2672-2.20: You play some music on a brand new bone flute.

I'm against music skills. Imagine a character, who was a famous guitarist known in few cities, and now it turns out that he's awkward and doesn't even know how to make one sound on it. Wicked.

You could just make the skill only appear in newspawns.
