Err, I am still thinking about these, inefficient imo, solar stills :lol:
I think up that we can add SALT as an extra product to existing now WATER. I think it's natural when we purify saltwater to gain after the project is finished some, not much, salt. And it will make solar stills more efficient and interesting machines.

This would definitely be cool, but I believe it is currently only possible for a project to produce one single resource.

Wow, they are only 2g per day??? Time is the most important resource, waiting that long for some water to trickle out is not so good. Even if no one has to work on the thing, it should I think give at least 6-10g water per day.

Would be better to make it non-automatic and un-nerfing the water production rate (if nonautomatic then it'd go higher than I suggested) than leaving it like this at only 2g.

It's water it produces, come on. Not iron. Only works when the boat is moving, too, restricting it more.

1. Find a dockyard of abandoned ships (not that hard if you're in the right place).
2. Build solar stills in all of the ships, then start long water collection projects and leave them while you do other things.

Yeah pretty strange, but you can see how it might have been implemented to nerf the abuse potential of the thing (as Joo was imagining, actually). They seem to have forgotten to un-nerf the production rate when/after the "only when moving" restriction got put in.

I must admit, I am not very familiar with the solar still myself. Probably due to the fact that they are so rare, and with such a small production rate, and high cost I can see why.

I agree with you, we should up the rate to make it more reasonable. I am not sure exactly what the rate should be set at, but I will do some research and see. I would have no problem changing this to make it more useful.

Also, €e$y brought up a thought as well. It would be nice to have some sort of machine that gathered salt while at sea as well. I can do some real life research myself and see what sort of machine they have used to do this. I am not sure if a salting barrel can be built on a ship or not, I will have to look at that, but if it can than this could be a good way to sustain yourself while at sea for longer periods of time.

What do all of you think?

I have salting barrels on ships. If a project cannot produce 2 resources, then could it be set to run the first half for water, then a short project to get the salt?

What if you set the project for 10 days, it runs 10 days, you get 20 grams of water.. then it automatically runs for 2 more days and you get 10 g of salt?

Or make the still useable to either accumulate water or salt?

I do think the water accumulation is too low..

Sounds awesome, Elros. Let's make it 2g salt per day, and only when the ship is moving.

Just kidding :D

I reckon sailors equipped with solar stills or the proposed salt extractors shouldn't feel nerfed, they should be fair contenders to shore-bound producers of the resources. Perhaps 20% less than shore-bound, or something like that (since the ship devices are automatic) but definitely not 2000% less or whatever it is now. :shock:

I am not sure if we will add the salt collection project to the still, or if we will make another entirely new machine for it... I have to look and see exactly how a still works before I decide on that.

Either way, water collection rates need to be increased on the still now, and we can worry about salt collection later.

I agree, the still needs to be reasonable. It is ridiculous in my opinion now... I am not sure on what percentages to set it at yet, but I will do some research when I get home(at work and filters block Cantr and Wiki, just not the forum :( ).

I am not sure if we will go quite as high as 80% of the land-based machines, but we will definetly do better than it is now. It is an automatic project after all, and we don't want to make the rates too high because it will cause it to become unbalanced. I will coem up with a few suggestions and post them on here in a day or so.

People have been complaining about things to do, and about this, so why not make it not so automatic? Maybe like drying meat. If possible automatic = slow, but with assistance = faster aka normal. If not, then just only with work.

The easiest way would just be to have a large pan, fill it with saltwater and let it dry. I don't know how feasible that is on a rocking boat, but it should work on land without problem.

It would in any case enable, in combination with fishing nets, a character to survive on sea without ever docking to land. As far as I'm aware that's not possible at the moment and maybe it should be checked first if it would violate an existing policy if it was implemented now.

Another way to produce salt at see would be boil saltwater using a pot and some kind of fuel. This would be more effective, but would require docking to a port from time to time.

All methods to obtain salt from seawater should be available in locations bordering to the sea, too, to keep it consistent.

Alright. what do you guys think about 15 grams of water per day? Since it is an automatic project that is not too much, but I think it is not too little either. Since the ship has to be moving then the only way to accumalate a large amount would be to travel a very long way.

So, 15 grams sounds reasonable to me, what do you guys think? More or less?
