Zoning out

Postby SekoETC » Thu Jul 16, 2009 5:11 am

In the past some useful suggestions like restraining and near-death state have been shot down on the basis that they make a character helpless and unable to do anything to for example stop disturbing rp. Most games consider an ignore option a must-have since no one should be forced to read messages they don't want to, but for some reason Cantr doesn't have that.

It's been said that everyone should see all the events in their location but what if they really don't want to? Even in real life you can zone out so that you refuse to hear what people are saying. I think it would be good to have the option to enter a zoned out state in which you couldn't hear any talking. You would still see the talking but not hear the contents. Like if your character's name was Joe, you would get "You see kidnapper talking to Joe." instead of 'kidnapper says to you: "I'm going to cut off your tongue and make you swallow it."' It would be pretty simple to implement.

It could also be extended so that all events were displayed from an outsider perspective, since this would probably help some players to remain detached. Also if passing items was viewed from an outsider perspective, that would eliminate the option to use note titles for "force-feeding" messages. The notes would still go through but if the player was expecting something obscene, they could choose not to view the notes tab.

Well I don't really agree that if someone whispers to you, you'd be somehow able not to hear it.. I mean, unless "zoning out" is actually putting your hands over your ears and going "BLAA BLA BAL BLA BLAAAA!"

ACTUALLY!

I can "zone out" very very well and not hear when someone is directly talking to me... unless they SHOUT in my ear in which case all I notice is the shout and not the words.

That would be something like...

"You see kidnapper SHOUT AT Joe."

////

"I'm going to cut off your tongue and make you swallow it!'

I'm just saying, in the ideal situation people would ask for consent OOC or at least stop playing explicit if someone complains, but it's not a perfect world. If someone has their character captured and tortured to death, the player might not want to see it in the death email.

Oh dear, we're all so fragile and precious and innocent that we shouldn't have to read about imaginary events occuring in a game which we chose to play, resulting from a situation which we played our characters to get into. Whatever shall we do?!

But the thing is, those fragile and precious and innocent players are shooting down suggestions like restraining, knockout and hanging because they can't handle something happening to their characters against their permission. So if there was a see no evil, hear no evil option, those people would no longer have a reason to whine since they could block it out.

I would like knocking out instead of killing. People tick a box for knocking people out, then if their hit would've killed the person, the person is knocked out instead.

This character is "knocked out" you may not see their event page. X|

I'd rather RP being knocked out with groaning and mumbling etc.... OR "zoning out"

ACTUALLY, depending on the character I kinda have them "zone out" at times anyway.

More like being unable to do anything but watch for two hours or so.

In which case, Wiro... I end up ignoring the character anyway.
