Why didn't I get superpowers with my autism?lol.
Piscator......not everyone with autism has " superpowers " or any unique abilities that they excel in.....
EDIT: in fact now that i think of it most autistic people just have an abstract way of looking at things which is often complicated and difficult to understand. this doesn't make them geniuses. if it does, then i must have an IQ of 310.
I know. I'm just using a stereotype.

My understanding of autism was people who had serious communication problems, often leading to outbursts and trouble functioning normally in society without...special treatment. As best I can put it. I babysit this autistic kid alot, and I think what his mom explained to me was that he just has a problem communicating, which frustrates him, so he acts out, and so on. And often they're very gifted from a young age, but with the communication issues...yeah. Leading to so-called 'idiot-savants' or whatever.
I was thinking that's what it was, but maybe that's just the super-duper severe stuff.

Autism is just a big pile of problems, because people were too lazy to sort things properly. And you have tons of subgroups (there's one that's like "Not Otherwise Specified", lazy bastards) as well. I really don't believe in it. People are people, and everyone has problems. *shrugs*

I don't believe in autism as a problem, really, it's too big. The things covered in it might be real, but I don't believe in autism as, well, just like that.

Maybe the disability factor of some autism spectrum disorders is often exaggerated but the actual old fashioned autism is very limiting. If someone is totally lost in their own world and doesn't understand how other people are feeling or why they act the way they do, you can't say that wouldn't be a problem.

Well that's something people were always telling me (that I didn't understand people's feelings and stuff), and when I told them it was not true, all I got was that I was too young to understand. So, yeah, it is greatly exaggerated.

I don't know, from what I've seen of people with autism is a lack of that... 'comfort' about them socially. As if they're trying to guess and or imitate instead of being able to natively interpret things like other peoples feelings. I guess, but I've never met anyone extremely autistic. This is a shot in the dark, but I think autism might classify like ADD. Honestly, by the current medical standards the amount of people with ADD is rediculous, I think it's become a blanket term now. Someone has some slight problem maintaining their attention on a single topic, and it's classified as ADD. My cousin who's my age has 'ADD' and she has no serious problems from the outside, I would've never known if I hadn't been told.

I was thinking of ADD even before I read your post.=P

That reminds me of what I think of ADD. I don't believe in it that much even though I feel like I have it, or at least used to think I have it. Kind of like global warming.
As for autism, I have an uncle who's exxageratedly autistic (you can tell when he speaks) but he's like a super genius. (What's 4536 x 2536? 11503296) I find that interesting.

I use to do volunteer work in the special needs classes in highschool and autism was the most common issue with most of the kids. They have to have alot of regularity and structure. They dont comprehend reality the same as everyone else so their thought process is very surreal, this is also what leads up to the "idiot savant" things because things that are very logical to them are sometime very hard for more "normal" people due to thier logic process.. the thing about the world autistic people live in is its easy to shatter and break their flow of thought and reality.. they have a hard time communicating because they practically do live on another planet. They are incredible people though and can help broaden your perspective when worked around often

Actually the amount of people diagnosed with ADD is nil. What people are actually diagnosed with is ADHD-I (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder - Predominately Inattentive) since the terminology has been changed as of the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). It's similar to the change Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression) and Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personalities) went through.

Since everyone can say so eloquently about autism what I bunged up so badly, ADD and Bipolar...
Speaking of both of those--yeah, Doctors love the old ADD/ADHD (they were tryin to diagnose me ADD back when that's still what it was) and not even really look at you. I was only 150mg of Adderall. And I was like 8. ANd for people who don't have ADD the shit like cracks you out.
I'm the very last person in the world who needs to be cracked out. I would take my pill and not sleep for two days, just stay up cleaning, and cutting out pictures from magazines so meticulously I think it could legitimatley be called OCD, although I'm not normally OCD.
Though when they later put me on Concerta--another ADD/ADHD med, I was so paranoid: I was sitting on my laundry with meat cleavers convinced my upstairs neighbour's boyfriend had killed her, knew I was listening, and was coming down to kill me.
They also tried to stick me with ODD before they finally took a look and realized, "Hey! I'm bipolar over here!" Gah. American medicine just sucks, they're so quick to pump you full of chemicals and get you out of there, regardless of whether or not you're better. And I grew up in the South, where healthcare's even MORE attrocious, though maybe not as crowded as Northern Hospital's. Below the bible belt, 'Mental Health Care' pretty much means, "Your brain doesn't feel good? You're crazy. We're gonna lock you up till you're not."
Fun.
