More transparent docking

Postby Piscator » Mon Jul 06, 2009 10:50 am

I think it would be a neat thing if we could get an estimate of how long docking would take before we dock. Something like "Docking would take X hours. Proceed?".

It would also be a good thing if the docking mechanics could be published. I don't seem to find anything about it in the wiki.

Moved to accepted. The wiki part of the suggestion is something for the players to fix, of course, not necessarily staff ...

The problem with the wiki is that probably no player actually knows how docking progress is calculated. I know I don't.

Yeah, I don't know either... I wonder if it even goes the way it was intended, since the way it advances doesn't seem to be linear.

It goes something like 100, 75, 55, 43, 35, 30...and then I think it might be 27 and then 23, but I don't know for sure below 30. Of course I am talking about percent docked.

Yeah, must be something like that. But that's as unintuitive as the points system in tennis. And I'm still interested in the mathematics behind it.

And it's different for different boats, I think.

It would certainly have made me less scared to have one of my characters starve to death a while ago.

Well, someone with source code access can figure it out then :-) ...

The amount of turns it takes to dock is defined when the docking starts (distance divided by maximum speed of the vehicle). After this the turns field is reduced by one on each sailing tick until the number is lesser than or equal to 1. So I'm not sure why it needs to calculate a percentage if it's stored as turns left before docking in the database.

Why are the odds of animal birth calculated on a distribution curve instead of a fixed %? Just one of the many frustrating quirks that make us love Cantr so much.

Its not. If you are 30% docked, the next percentage will be 35% and so on. The only difference is where you start. Rake thats really close starts at 75%, 55% or even just docks with 100% but a longboat might take longer and starts at 30% or maybe less. Anyways, it always increases in the same way, it will always be 55% then 75% and then 100%.

Well, in this case I'd like to supplement the original suggestion and propose that the current system is replaced with a simple "X hours to go" counter or that such a thing is at least added.
