How do you know what resources you need?
Hi,
Just about something strange. How is it possible that you know what kind of resources you need for a project?
For instance, when you want to make biscycle, you need Rubber and Steel (or iron... dunno). But how do you know you need those resources? How do you know that those resources excist at all?
I know, this goes far... but how can you now about the excistence of a resource if you haven't seen it at all?
Jochem
PS: sorry for my bad English

I agree IRL the secret of steel was just that a secret.
But if we go with a more realistic apprach it would disadvatage new players too much.
As a half measure the number of projects a person knows how to do could be split to half the list at random. You get to add the ones you do not have if you just see them as a project or existing?
New players would also start with a half list randomized for the individual.
Existing players can reset with their relalities quickly since they have access ro all the items they own and have built and still have around them.
The ones you do not know how to do you have ??? replacing all the stats and maybe even the names.
If this works out then the number of porjects a person is "born" knowing could be reduced to a quarter of them all. The existing players would have to do the relarning thing again.
The list could get smaller and smaller. I belive that everyone should be born knowing at least one invention at random if not more.
Another way to populate the list of personal invention ideas is to have it "occur" to people who have the right stuff {maybe not enough just the types} and are in the right place. A 1% chance per day of coming up with a "new" {actually old} invention. "An idea has occured to you on how to build a jeep" {To bad you have not figured out the hammer yet

I would have it different: first everyone would have to rediscover things, so we all atart on a level playing field, unless you know how to make things in your inventory.
Then you have to experiment with various materials and amounts, with a random chance, to discover how to make something, so new technology becomes an actvity to discover it.
That's the basics of how I would approach it.

I don't like that idea. I haven't seen gold before, but I know it exsists IRL. If we make the game to difficult new people aren't going to want to play. Lets just pretend that this person studied all these things the first 20 years of his/her life.
Now maybe when babies are introduced you will have to learn about all the things for those hardcore players who wants a challenge and speacking of babies. I was just thinking maybe your account should have to be so-and-so old to be able to apply for being a baby that way baby are only played by people who already know how to play the game.

I think this is all silly who about a you can't speak till you learn how or maybe you can walk till you learn how or even better yet you can't read till you learn how come on now don't you r taking this to far
Somehow you strayed and lost your way,
and now there'll be no time to play,
no time for joy,
no time for friends
- not even time to make amends.
You are too naïve if you do believe life is innocent laughter and fun.

Our characters start at 20, so they know that, but in Cantr's enviroment there is nothing to say that you can find out about how to make things like cars etc before 20.
When babies are implemented they wil have to learn to speak etc

I think there was an interesting discussion on this somewhere, maybe in the old yahoo group. I like the idea of not knowing everything-but I think there should be ways of people telling you things they already know. So say you don't know how to make a hammer, but someone you know already knows that--well, they should be able to impart that knowledge.
