I read this whole thread so that I could be a responsible poster... and now I have to follow that post.

I'm 374 in the queue. :p I'm hoping (read: imagining/pretending) that there's going to be a flood of new characters reaching breeding age. This will result in speeding up my wait to such a degree that there will be a shortage of new players to fill in as babies.

If I were making a game,

- And if it were like FTO, I'd allow the first few generations of players to spawn directly into the world before turning on the baby making. This would speed up the queue, and hopefully reduce the unpleasantries of incest.

- I'd give it a mythological theme that makes an attempt to explain the anomalies created by the dynamic between the player experience and the character experience, or the UI with the game world.

- I would not claim that it provides a completely blank slate for character and society creation.

If I made a game where people were born into families, I'd make a separate waiting area for people who haven't been born into the game yet and they could learn about the game mechanics and figure out if it's the kind of a game they'd like to play. When people are born into the real world, they would die in or vanish from the waiting world, leaving their items and resources behind. Maybe the other world would develop its own culture.

Thats rather cleaver Seko, you could run tests in the waiting world too. It would prevent from doing anything randomly drastic to the "core world" and allow you something, as a developer, to poke at as well.

On another note, I forget what my cue number is.

Yesterday it was at 157 or so, doubt it has moved much.

Yeah, that's a good idea.

What I've learned from Cantr though is that the conditions have to be just right for in game culture to appear, and it depends more on the player base than the game developer.

EDIT: let me rephrase that last thing. It depends a lot on the player base, and is rare.

Oddly enough, this is almost the exact model Reveri.es is based on. Although, it has a few unique twists on the above.

I assume this was also the idea behind FTO being in open beta - that once the queue is sufficiently emptied and enough of a mature breeding population is established it will then move out of beta? Pure speculation, mind. ;)

Woo! I'm now 373 in the queue, down from 374 just 6 hours ago.

This is the craziest way to kick off a game I've ever seen.

Seko's idea of some sort of before-life limbo realm for the unborn to hang out in is looking better and better.
