swimming

Postby snm2001 » Sun May 17, 2009 6:14 pm

ok, for the towns that have water nearby.. maybe allow for swimming like you allow for resting.. make it something that makes you tired and if you stay in to long you need people to drag you out.

So basically it just makes you tired? Kinda useless, it could just be roleplayed y'know. =P So, what about increased strength? So if you swim a lot you'll get stronger.

sounds good to me.. I've seen it RPd.. but so can resting, I just thougth it would look better when you checked a character out and it said they were novicely swiming or something like that.. it makes it something they are actually doing instead of faking it. then when people come to town they dont get out of a vehicle and walk over to give someone a hug when everyone else knows they are offshore

Difference is resting does decrease tiredness. ;) You can't RP having tiredness go down. And I remember a similiar suggestion for having sex, lol, so when people come inside they don't have to wonder "Are they having sex?..." and so there are many other examples. So this would really ask for another suggestions.

A solution to this that might not need new projects to be added for things characters could be doing would be a kind of "char status" setting. You could write a simple "what my char is currently doing" line such as "sleeping" and it would appear to any players who checked your char page as "He is in his twenties and is efficiently working on project 'Manufacturing a bone knife'. He is currently sleeping. He wears nothing worth mentioning."

So players could set this in tune to their roleplay of "having sex" or "swimming" or "shaking uncontrollably" etc... I think it could add a whole lot to RP, if used responsibly of course!

And then we get the complaint about "OMG THEN THEY KNOW THE LANGUAGE OF THAT CHARACTER!" and then someone suggests "Then let's have pre-made statuses! :D" and then someone goes "Omg but then everyone thinks cantr promotes sex!"

Well yeah the standard problem set will always crop up...but at least under the suggestion title of swimming we can hide from the "promoting sex" bit

I'd rather have a free-style description. I guess it could be hidden from other language groups very easily, so the language issue is not a very serious argument in my opinion.

This suggestion (or rather that what it developed into) could be very easily combined with general character descriptions. If we had such a thing, it would be no problem to add a line about what the character is currently doing to the end of the character description.

lmao.. well if you walk into a room where two normally clothed people arent.. they are probably having sex. that might tell ya right there. and that wouldnt interrupt RP if someone walked into a room and interacted with a character as much as say going over to a player who just RPd thier butt off on the whole swimming thing but they are still gathering onions somewhere (I know thats bad RP and no one would really notice but I do) and then someone walks up to them in the onion patch and talks to them but they are in the water and yell at them "*she smiles* no no, I'm over here way out in the water *laughs*"

generally I like it for the tag for better RP.. Its not a vulgar suggestion.. child friendly and all that, and you can get better as you do it, it could be related to fishing too, maybe with a spear or something

Maybe they're just like.. performing a medical check-up on eachother? However, if they're both on the same fur rug or cot, then... x3 ...they might just have forgotten to put some clothes on after the medical check-up on eachother? :)

bleh, I would like being able to put up a description, a lot. No more guessing what people are doing, or "*opens the door slightly, still waiting outside, not looking in* Can I come in?" to give them the time to go "*moans loudly of pleasure as the sound of a liquid squirting all over the floor and wall is heard* One second..." as it sometimes takes way too long for people to reply, with timezones and all, and some even just act like they were just talking... not doing anything at all (tsk tsk!).

Snm, I don't think it's likely that a skill that serves absolutely no purpose is added to the game. If swimming could be used to travel on (or rather through) water without a boat, that would be a different matter of course.

How ever you want to do it, I like the idea of something to identify basic actions, while we can possibly tie swimming to becoming stronger or fishing or gathering water or even transportation across lakes.. there are boats that are to big to go into lakes.. we could make it possible for someone to swim from one town to another at the speed of walking .. but only across lakes

Perhaps there could be an action 'exercising' which slowly improves your strength, generates tiredness and prevents you from working on other projects. If we had a specific action called 'swimming', we probably had to include 'jog', 'doing pushups' and 'running round in circles' pretty soon too.

I actually like the suggestion, although it would have to increment strength slowly. Otherwise, people would just spend the first two years of their lives exercising to max out their strength. This would fit in nicely with my ideas for skill atrophy.
