Naturally no one would force anyone to play it. There's something in KoL that allows dragging graphics so looks like it's possible even without an applet, but I'm not sure how it works. My point was that a system that has no coded in rules or graphics is much more flexible than any built-in selection of finished games such as chess. Movable pieces would be the only requirement. If they could also be rotated and maybe even flipped (having a second graphic on the other side) that would expand the options. Although it still wouldn't include random chance so it would only be good for strategy games.

I demand Mouse Trap and/or Kerplunk if we're putting games in!

Chess and checkers come exclusively from RL western culture... anything like that should be invented IG.

As far as I know there aren't any apache indians but we still have apache throwing stars. I don't think that logic need always apply.

The name "Apache throwing star" is an abomination that never should have made it into the game. Now that I'm in GAB, maybe I can finally do something about it. Thanks for reminding me.

Since when are ancient Indian games western culture?

I think logic always applies. That is sort of the point of logic.

Can you deal with "Sou'wester" while you're at it?

Well, why not? It is an oilskin hat, isn't it? I'd presume half of the translations call it that way anyway.

When it comes to clothing names, it's easier to change them in the translations table than changing the actual name of the object since that would make all the existing items break.

What about the canvas duffel then?

Of course, the distinction is not always clear. For example, most of the boat names - longboat, raker, galleon, etc are all cultural references, however when something uses a recognisable RL group name, (e.g. Apache throwing star) or a name that is overly colloquial where a more technical equivalent is possible (e.g. sou'wester) then I think the line has been crossed.

The topic is jumping around all over the place but I just wanted to go back to this, can we have dice? Pleeeeease? Pretty please? :P They could be carved out of bone and just display something like 'You see whoever roll a (random number) with a pair of dice" whenever someone uses them.

It would open up so many possibilities.

I thinks something like that has been suggested before and I believe one argument against it was that it could become very annoying pretty easily if a dice would shout "I rolled a 4." every time it is used.

Imagine two people playing a game of Yahtzee in the town square, spamming everybody's event list with dozens of "xy rolled a z" messages. Games of chance would become outlawed very soon.

Outlawed outside in most places, but there's nothing wrong in going inside to play, in most places... There are a TON of Inns, Pubs, and Taverns in our Cantry little world, but no reason to go in them.
