What I hate about this, and I guess a certain type of evil character in general, is that in Cantr it's so easy to pretend. All you have to do is type *smiles* at the end of every sentence and your character is somehow the greatest actor in the world, able to be seething with inner hatred or smugly planning some big heist for years and years and never showing the slightest evidence of what they're thinking until they finally make their move and then suddenly they're in full on villain monologue mode.

It's so much more satisfying to me to play someone who really does have a change of heart, or even someone that is an unforgiving jerk or a greedy and manipulative one and just doesn't do a very good job of hiding the fact, even if of course you cut down your chances of success that way, IMO the RP possibilities more then make up for it.

I've a prick type character that is fully happily living in a town and it SEEMS like no one REALLY wants him dead. He's more mouthy then actions but he's done his share of 'villainy'. Maybe its because he had people 'on his side' or people just don't really care?

Seriously! I'm shocked, not sad, he's still alive! Although he isn't hell bent on hurting people and must be 'lead' to it. Actually, most seem to tolerate him rather well. Even seem to be his friend for some reason.

Having a flat out mean or nasty character with ZERO conscience leads to insto death ala Cantr. :( Its kinda funny how quick fellow townsmen, some of whom have never spoken, wake up just to catch a thief.

One of Cantr's greatest mysteries ever, it seems.

I think I had one of the first stuttering characters and she died at about 100+ from what I recall. I think she had plenty of depth and life to her, she lived through Purple Tortoise's reign and so many other 'historical' milestones.

I have a problem when rping characters: I've got certain accents that go in my head with their personalities, that are paired with them, but I can't pair them up because it's sooo hard to communicate that through text sometimes. Like a charrie that has a brit accent but uses american and southern colloquialisms (and believe me there is a difference).
RPing actions is a site easier, since I tend to use body language more anyway, though it is alot harder to be subtle.

I was actually looking for some advice on this actually, I'm pretty new. Seko you seem to be sick at it, some help?

If there's no one else within earshot, speak it out or mutter while you're typing. If something doesn't feel right, go back and fix it. Or might type the whole block of text, then re-read it and put the pauses and stuttering where it comes naturally. If it's a nervous character, tightening your muscles might help get in the mood. (I don't have to do it consciously, it just happens. Nervous characters are barely breathing and that makes them feel light-headed.) I generally use ellipses for a pause even though it gets annoying if overused, sometimes I only use two periods in the middle of a sentence to make a smaller pause, even though it's not "correct". If a character's accent is difficult to remember, it might be good to make a cheat sheet of the key features. One might omit Hs and tend to say "oi" and "bloody 'ell" and "bollocks"... I love doing that. XD

Oh, and while most of my characters are troublemaker types (well, actually about half), this thread has made me decide to spawn my first ever "whore" character, who sort of reminds me of Aneka from Krod Mandoon, except I'll *actually* be a whore....and get paid and stuff. Expect to see me soon BWAHAHAH.

Oh, on an unrelated note, how come we don't have a mail system?

Same reason as so many things, NO TRUST! Can't the mail guy to not read your mail or even deliver the mail.

On another note: My character, as coined by his 'gal', stammers not stutters. I didn't really know a word for it when I typed up whats about with him. To be honest all 'speech issues' can be 'fixed' in game if others are willing to try and 'fix' them.

Example: My character would stammer less if he was more confident in his words and/or thought he was smarter.

There is or was a mail system on Seatown region but I would imagine that radios have made such things obsolete.

Whores in Cantr are nothing new but they often seem to be hard to find when you actually have a character who would be ready to pay for such services. Also the quality might vary. Only one of my characters has ever been with a hooker and it was a disappointment, that chick had no class and I wouldn't be surprised if it had really been played by some horny guy who can't get any in real life. I'd say most characters in Cantr are either prudes or already in a relationship.

In that case, I'll be a courtesan--meaning I get more money and get to pick and choose my clientele. Yay!
Oh, shit, I can't, that's using OOC knowledge--or is it?, cuz I haven't started the character yet.

It's just common sense, if you don't get the kicks out of playing a cheap slut then no one should force you to do it. Not being ready to sleep with just anyone could mean having to spend a bit longer in searching for suitable customers but it should be better in the long run.

I miss the old mail system in that region. I remember how fun it was to send random letters to people. And someone I travelled with made very good use of that.
