I've had some trouble getting back into the swing of things as well. I honestly feel like years have passed for my characters do it's taking me some time to remember how to make them function as they would normally.
I caught myself playing one character like a completely different personality.
LC, I had the same thought. I planned intricate deaths for some of mine. Sadly, their deaths were, and have been, the only thing that I could get right on with their personalities.

I'm having a huge amount of trouble getting back into my characters, too. I was already having some difficulty staying interested before the downtime, now I'm just plain ignoring most of my characters or not interacting when they otherwise would. I feel bad because people are trying to interact with my chars, but I can't seem to remember how mine work, so I ignore them instead.
I think I'm going to have to sort of rebuild a lot of personalities. One round of mid-life crises comin' up.

Before the downtime I hit the top 50 most active list (and ridiculously high on it), and I've no doubt this hasn't changed since.
I play 15 and I'd say 12 of those have clear and easily remembered characteristics/personalities/goals. I've only invested ~6 months in them, but have developed some brilliant character histories thus far.
The game really hasn't yet picked up since the downtime, and I'm worried about some of the diehard older players killing off old characters now (one in particular). Pity.
I'm afraid to say, these games only survive when people are addicted, and downtime of a couple of days is enough to kill that addiction. Weeks of downtime just demonstrates the unreliability of access to your addiction - so you replace it with something more reliable.
Personally (inb4 offense..) I see access to this type of "game" (free or not - I'm happy to pay, I have paid monthly & micropayments and would do so again) as a HUGE investment in time and emotion, and expect a similar level of commitment to keeping it running at an acceptable level (hosting, service level guarantees and basic server housekeeping are cheap as chips these days. Really!). I see the excuse of a game being free as a complete and utter cop out.
I still play whenever I can, but if/when I stop, I know cantr is easily replaced by another vworld, or other obsessions. Which is what seems to be happening with others now. I'm sad for cantr, because it has potential but no momentum, IMHO.
